NORTH MANCHESTER - Even a coaching change couldn't shake Manchester's boys basketball team out of its woes.

Manchester, which began the season 3-0, lost its fourth straight and fell to 6-7 with a 65-51 Tuesday loss to Carroll (6-6).

Junior varsity coach Steve Rice coached the varsity Squires as head coach Gary Goshert was expelled for one game after being ejected in Friday's 90-80 loss to Peru. After an ejection, the IHSAA requires that coach to miss the next game.

It is the first time this season the Squires have fallen under .500.

"It's frustrating," Rice said. "We have to stay together as a team and get going in the right direction. I know coach Goshert will work his butt off to get things straightened out."

The loss dropped Rice, who's been Manchester's junior varsity head coach for years, to 1-1 as a varsity head coach.

"I did it one other time, 10 or 11 years ago when Pete Smith was here," Rice said. "We won that one."

Senior guard Dave Mahlan led Carroll with 17 points, while junior reserve forward Gabe Miller added 15. Senior forward Lee Schafer scored 15 for Manchester, and junior guard David Bazzoni chipped in 10.

"When you play Manchester at Manchester, you have to play pretty decent to win here," Carroll coach Rob Irwin said. "Hey, we came in struggling, too."

After the teams finished the third quarter in a 40-40 tie, Carroll put the game away in the fourth. The Chargers hit 7 of 7 field goals and 8 of 10 free throws in the quarter as they outscored Manchester 25-11.

"We hit a lot of layups," Irwin said. "That would be the first time in quite a while we didn't miss a field goal in a quarter."

Mahlan hurt Manchester the most, scoring 11 of his 17 in the quarter. Mahlan hit back-to-back threes during Carroll's 11-0 run to start the quarter that put Carroll ahead 51-40.

Carroll hit 21 of 39 field goals (54 percent) and 16 of 20 free throws (80 percent).

"This is the best we've played in a while, one of our better efforts all around," Irwin said.

The Squires never had the lead in the game, and the 40-40 score at the end of the third was the only time they tied the game. Trailing 40-31, the Squires closed the third quarter with a 9-0 run to even the game.

"We had opportunities to take the lead, but we never could get the lead," Rice said. "At the start of the fourth, we broke down terribly defensively, and they got two good looks, a two and a three. We were down five right away.

"I don't know if we didn't have enough left to come back or what. It was a game of spurts. We didn't have a spurt in the fourth quarter."

Manchester did little to help itself, hitting but 13 of 25 free throws (52 percent) in the game. The Squires hit 18 of 42 field goals (43 percent).

"In the first half, we shot terrible at the line (9 of 16)," Rice said. "We would have been right there if we shot better.

"We haven't shot the ball very well. That magnifies all your other weaknesses as a team. We somehow have to get this thing turned around."
