NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊAfter taking a 28-16 lead at the half, the Manchester Squires should have cruised to a victory over the Churubusco Eagles.

Should have.

But the Eagles had other ideas for the Squires. The Eagles fought back to tie the score early in the fourth and make a game of it.

But in the end Manchester capitalized on Churubusco's fouls in the final minutes of play to earn a 61-49 win.

"We gave them a lot of light at the end of the tunnel," said Manchester coach Gary Goshert. "It's hard to get in a good flow when you make so many violations."

The Eagles took an 11-10 lead after the first quarter, but Manchester started the second stanza with three steals and a 9-0 run.

The Squires went on to hold Churubusco to just five points through the second frame while pouring in 18 points of their own. Manchester took a 28-16 advantage at the half.

While it looked like the Squires had clipped the Eagles' wings, Churubusco continued to fight.

After Klint Rupley started the third quarter with a three-pointer for the Squires, Churubusco's Ryan Doster answered with a basket of his own.

Then Rupley was fouled as he hit a layup at the 6:14 mark and hit the ensuing free throw to make the score 34-18 in Manchester's favor.

However, Churubusco dominated through the next six minutes. Behind a 10-point explosion from Dustin Beucler, the Eagles went on a 12-0 run to cut Manchester's lead to three, 34-31.

Nate Kerr hit a basket for Manchester with 19.5 ticks left on the clock to up the Squire lead to five, but Preston Oler drained a three at the buzzer to make the score 36-34 heading into the final frame of play.

Doster hit a basket at the 7:32 mark in the fourth frame to knot the score at 36-all. Dustin Simcoe and Beucler traded free throws to knot the score again at 37.

Then Simcoe jump-started the Manchester offense with two straight baskets, giving the Squires a 41-37 lead.

The Squires held the lead from that point on as Simcoe and Todd Dale poured in seven points each, and Rupley added nine in the fourth frame of play.

Rupley led all scorers with 19 points, while Churubusco's Beucler added 18. Simcoe finished with 12 points, and Dale added 11 for Manchester.

"I thought Dustin Simcoe showed a lot of courage," said Goshert. "He came through tonight in such a crucial situation.

"You could say the same thing about Todd Dale as well. He played for the team. He got some key steals and make some improtant free throws for us tonight."

With the win, Manchester improves to 12-7 on the season, while Churubusco falls to 1-15. The Squires travel to Marion March 2.
