Squires Can't Solve Southwood

WABASH - After falling to the Southwood Knights twice earlier in the season, the Manchester Squires hoped that the third time would be the charm in Tuesday's sectional matchup.
Unfortunately for the Squires, that old saying did not ring true as Southwood defeated Manchester 6-0 in the first game of the Wabash Sectional.
Southwood's pitcher Justin Denney was the star of the game as he faced the Squires for the third time. Denney pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits, walking one and striking out three.
"Justin Denney pitched one heck of a ball game," said Manchester coach Jack Rupley. "This is the third time we've faced him and he was sharp. He was sharper this time than the other times we played him. He's a good pitcher and SouthWood has a good team."
Southwood jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning as Denney drove two runs across the plate on a double to centerfield to put the Knights up 2-0.
The game then remained scoreless until the top of the third inning, when the Southwood offense opened up for four hits and three runs to extend their lead to five, 5-0.
Southwood was not finished in the third, though. The Knights squeezed in one more run in the top of the seventh to make their lead 6-0. Manchester was unable to score in the seventh inning, and Southwood earned a 6-0 shutout victory.
The Knights held Manchester scoreless and allowed the Squires to get just three hits in the game. Two of those hits came from first baseman Kory Rupley who went 2 for 3. The only other Manchester hit came from Kedric Miller, the Squire left-fielder.
Manchester finishes the season 17-10, but the Squires are optimistic about next year. Only one varsity player, Shawn Filip, will graduate this year, leaving nine juniors to come back to play next year.
"Shawn Filip is our only senior," said Rupley. "He stuck with us through a 3-20 season a few years ago. He has been a good leader, and he's really pumped the other kids up this year." [[In-content Ad]]
