Editor, Times-Union:
For those readers of the Times-Union who are fans of history, politics, and military strategy and tactics, or who would be interested in reading about one of the most divisive conflicts in the 20th century – the Spanish Civil War.

A conflict that still stirs heated arguments in some circles even now in 2012. It should also serve as a warning to any nation, even our own, about the dangers of persistent economic stagnation, geopolitical decline caused by imperial overreach, political polarization of the electorate, partisan gridlock and the resulting breakdown of government and other vital institutions, the lack of a common identity that genuinely unifies a nation and its naturally and vastly diverse people, and finally the misguided acceptance by the general population of authoritarian or totalitarian dictatorship as the one and only path to peace, prosperity, progress and liberty.

Then they should take the time to read some of the well-documented books about the Spanish Civil War listed in the recommended reading list in the middle part of this letter. Interested readers will find these books available at the Warsaw Public Library or other libraries in the county, Amazon.com, or at their nearest bookstore.
