South Side Topples Tigers

FORT WAYNE - Experience, as defined by Webster's Dictionary, means to have lived through something.
A more simple definition of experience might be, "been there, done that."
With three full-time starters returning for their senior season and a classmate who made his way into the starting lineup for the sectional, as well as a coach entering his fourth year as head coach and 19th season in the program overall, it's fair to say Warsaw's varsity boys basketball team had experience entering the 2005-2006 season.
That experience wasn't evident, however, Saturday night as the Tigers fell 64-44 to host Fort Wayne South Side, a team that was led in scoring by a sophomore and a junior and had just one senior in the starting lineup.
"We just were not sharp on offense from the beginning," said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle, whose Tigers fell to 6-5 on the season as their four-game win streak came to an abrupt end. "South Side's defensive pressure was good and we didn't shoot the ball well."
And the Tigers had 20 turnovers, while South Side had just 12.
And the Tigers were just 7 of 10 from the free throw line for the entire game, while South Side converted 22 of 28 charity tosses.
And the Tigers were 1 of 10 from three-point range, while South Side was a more respectable 6 of 13.
After the 20-point loss, a defeat that gave Warsaw at least five losses in four consecutive seasons for the first time since the late 1970s and the Tigers' first setback to South Side since 1976, Ogle said his main focus was beating Northern Lakes Conference foe Northridge.
The Tigers beat the Raiders Friday, getting back in the NLC race with a 56-43 win in Middblebury, but Saturday Warsaw never looked in sync.
"They were quick and fresh," Ogle said of the Archers. "Not having a game (Friday) helped them. We were a step slow. Maybe we were a little tired. We put a lot into last night's game, and we were hoping to use the momentum from a good win. We just had too many turnovers. On defense we had too many breakdowns."
South Side, which improved to 5-4 on the season, led 20-10 after the first quarter and 32-23 at halftime.
The Tigers got as close as eight, 39-31, in the third quarter but trailed by at least 14 points through the entire fourth quarter.
Sophomore Derek Evans and junior Monte Simmons led the Archers in scoring with 12 points each, while junior Fred Ford finished with 10 points
Six South Side players scored at least six points.
Warsaw was led in scoring by junior Tommy Reinholt, who scored 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field.
Seniors Shaun Cabrera and Colin Clemens scored nine points each, while 6-foot-7 freshman Mason Plumlee, who splits time on the varsity and junior varsity team, added eight points.
In just 12 minutes of varsity action Saturday, the talented underclassmen was 3 of 3 from the field, 2 of 3 from the free throw line, grabbed three rebounds and had two assists and one blocked shot.
Having played seven of its 11 games this season on the road, the Tigers are 3-4 away from the Tiger Den and have a 3-1 record at home.
Warsaw hosts NLC foe Goshen Friday, but then will hit the road against Concord, which hasn't lost a home game since 2002, and NorthWood and Elkhart Memorial, teams that own a combined record of 14-4 this season.
