Third District Congressman Mark Souder visited Warsaw Tuesday morning to discuss an energy independence bill he says will move the United States toward energy independence.

Souder held his press conference at Lassus Handy Dandy gas station on Parker Street. He previously made stops Monday at Lassus Handy Dandy gas stations in Fort Wayne, Columbia City, Avilla and Auburn to discuss the energy bill. After visiting Warsaw, Souder stopped at Martin's Supermarket gas station in Goshen.[[In-content Ad]]Jeff Burgin, Warsaw Lassus Handy Dandy store manager, said he felt privileged Souder chose to stop at the gas station Tuesday.

"I'm in favor of the bill because we need more oil refineries to lower the cost of fuel for customers," Burgin said.

Souder announced he is co-sponsoring H.R. 6001, the Main Street USA Energy Security Act, which would move the United States toward energy independence and security.

"I thought $4 was likely to be the top price for fuel, but we don't know where the top is," Souder said.

He said the only way to control the price is to produce more energy in the United States and conserve energy.

Souder said the United States needs to get a certain percentage of the oil supply because China and India are outbidding the U.S., and that is increasing our fuel price.

"We are so oriented to our own world that we don't understand that, in the world, oil supply the United States is viewed as stagnant, even though we are growing," Souder said.

He says the bill would lower prices or sustain them in the long-term by instituting some major policy changes.

The bill would allow exploration in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge and in offshore areas of the United States, as well as increase the amount of refineries in the country. Souder's plan also would encourage more research in renewable energy.

The act looks to open up more of the Outer-Continental Shelf for domestic oil exploration, and use United States coal to produce electricity, diesel automotive and jet fuel.

Souder said no new oil refineries have built in the United States since 1976. The act would encourage increasing the number of domestic refineries built in the U.S.

The act also would call for research and development in coal, biomass and ethanol technologies, and grant tax credits to help grow renewable energy projects such as wind, solar and geothermal to improve energy efficiency and technologies.

The bill has been referred to five House committees, including Natural Resources, Energy and Commerce, Ways and Means, Armed Services and Science and Technology for further action.
