Third district Congressman Mark Souder spoke about the upcoming presidential election and his congressional race at the Republican Hall of Fame dinner Thursday night.

The dinner was attended by approximately 90 Republicans at Fusion Restaurant in downtown Warsaw.

He said this year's race is a difficult and challenging one.

"We are in a tough time financially and now is not the time to gamble with our future. This race has been a very sobering race for me to watch changes I didn't think would happen turn out to happen," Souder said.

He said the party that is out of power is generally more motivated than the party with power.

"Some of my most loyal Republicans are in Steuben County and in parts of Fort Wayne because they know there is a fight between the Democrats and Republicans," he said.

When a party has been in power for a while or begins to slide, and when the party is out of power they begin to unite, according to Souder.

"We thought Obama was going to melt under pressure and be intimidated by the war hero John McCain, but in my opinion, Obama has gained strength," Souder said.

He said Republicans are supposed to be the party of business and innovators. Souder encouraged Republicans to get out and vote and stand for Republican values.

Tracy Jackson, Congressman Souder's liaison, said Republicans can make a difference locally by participating in phone banks at the Republican headquarters.

District 9 State Senator Ryan Mishler, Bremen, and Al Disbro, Winona Lake, received the Republican Hall of Fame awards.

Jean Northenor, former Kosciusko County Republican chairwoman, presented the awards to Mishler and Disbro and provided history of the award.

She said the award was started in 1976 to recognize Republicans who contribute to county and state government and the Republican party.

"This county has been known as one of the Republican counties in the state, and it would break my heart if it doesn't continue in that manner," Northenor said.

Mishler said he was honored to receive the award.

"My family is from this community, and it makes me proud to represent this area because it's where my roots are and I really appreciate the support the community has given me," Mishler said.

Disbro said he was surprised to receive the award.

"It's nice to be in a room full of winners, and I think if we had Wednesday night's presidential debate start out like Souder did tonight, then Obama would have given up," Disbro said.
