Congressman Mark Souder has earmarked $2 million for research projects that will be managed by the University of Notre Dame.

Zimmer and DePuy will partner with the university in the research projects if the funding bill is approved by the Senate.

Souder announced Monday the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2008 includes $2 million that he has requested for a research partnership involving Zimmer and DePuy.

"The project will further northern Indiana's efforts to become a leader in life sciences and bio-medical innovation," Souder said in a press release.

The bill was approved by the House Sunday by a majority of 395-13.

The bill will be sent to the Senate to review in September for further action.

Brad Bishop, director of public affairs for Zimmer, said the specific areas of focus and Zimmer's level of involvement have not yet been determined.

"We look forward to making a meaningful contribution through our internal expertise," Bishop said.

This is the third time Souder has secured funding for this research partnership. He secured $1 million each year in 2005 and 2006 for the same project.

If the funding is approved by the Senate and signed into law by President Bush, the funding will go to several partnerships.

The partnerships include Zimmer, DePuy, the University of Notre Dame, Purdue University, Indiana University Medical School and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
