Although its been operational since September, the busy folks at Medtronic Sofamor Danek Mfg. found time to showcase its new facility Friday.
The off-white and blue building on the north side of U.S. 30 at the intersection of CR 150W was the scene of an open house hosted by Dan Tosby, Medtronic Sofamore Danek vice president and general manager.
"We're really happy with the plant," Tosby said.
"We've got an exciting future now. Warsaw, Kosciusko County and community members all have been very supportive and we're very appreciative of all their support."
Sofamor Danek was in Winona Lake and desperately needed to expand to meet manufacturing demands.
With financial assistance and forethought from the Warsaw City Council, the Warsaw redevelopment commission, planning commission, chamber of commerce and other county and state government agencies, the company stayed in Kosciusko County.
And they're glad they did according to the executive.
"Due to your contributions and achievements, the transition was really smooth," Tosby said. "We're glad to be a part of the local community."
The celebration included a 30-minute tour of the 150,000- square-foot plant.
The facility employs more than 300 people. Three shifts are currently running five days a week.
Danek's new building - consisting of 150,000-square-feet - includes an orthopedic hardware manufacturing and production facility with estimated costs at $20 million.
One of the tour guides, Mark Berg, director of production said the company plans to fill the remaining 22,000 square feet of "empty" space within the next two years, adding up to 80 more employees.
"We are the only manufacturer of spinal implants for Sofamor Danek now," he said.
"In Kosciusko County, you have a dedicated, hard-working work force who take pride in the orthopedic business," Berg said at one point during the tour. "We restore human life, that's what its all about."
