Our current entitlement system in America is keeping people from the truth – the truth about God and the truth about life. By keeping people dependent on the government for food, shelter, healthcare and other basic needs we are teaching a dependency and reliance upon the government instead of teaching people that God is the ultimate source who meets these needs and that each of needs to do our part. God’s word says the following in Proverbs chapter 6: “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.”

Our entitlement system is encouraging and increasing poverty levels all across this free land and this is not freedom either for the recipient of the entitlements or for those who pay into it through taxes. Unbeknownst to most people who receive entitlements, what the government is doing through this program is actually keeping people in check – in other words controlling us all. The last time I checked controlling someone is not allowing them to live in freedom and that freedom is what God has given to each one of us to take responsibility for our own actions.

There are some in our nation who receive government assistance because they were born with physical and mental disabilities. This I completely understand and support. However, the idea of giving government aid to people who refuse to work, continue to do drugs, sleep around, have baby after baby with man after man, etc., this is wrong and needs to stop. Doing drugs is not a mental disability. It may lead to a mental disability, but it is the result of a choice made by an individual and should not be government subsidized. This, in great part, if not the main reason, is why we have the national debt we have today.

I recently heard a definition of truth: “Truth is conforming our mind to reality.” That reality is that man was created to do good, but through the free will that God gave us when he created us, we chose sin and we continue to choose sin. Truth points us to the way out of a sinful lifestyle and that is through Jesus Christ who took our sins on himself through his death on a cross so that today we can live freely through the confession of our sins.  This very truth – that we have a free will – exposes us to the fact that we are each responsible for our own actions. We choose to either do good or to do evil. No government entitlement program or regulation can prevent man from doing wrong; however, through our government’s efforts at controlling people through entitlements and regulations, slowly, but surely people are being kept from the truth.
