SOUTH WHITLEY - Baby steps. Baby steps.
Baby steps, though small, can take you a long way and help you improve over time.
"At the beginning of the season," said Whitko coach Rachelle McCammon, "we started taking baby steps and learning how to win."
In a battle of area schools, Whitko kept taking its baby steps to defeat Wawasee 15-3, 15-8 in volleyball action Tuesday night.
Whitko scored the first point of game one but then found itself behind 2-1 for several possessions. After several changes in possession, Whitko quickly took a 6-2 lead after nailing four straight points.
However, Wawasee did not go down easily. The Warriors did not allow Whitko to score more than three points in a row for the rest of the game.
Although the Warriors kept Whitko from scoring easily, Wawasee failed to score points and eventually fell 15-3.
"Our girls showed poise and continued to play hard no matter what the score," said Wawasee coach Jason Fleming.
Like the first match, game two began with a battle for possession, but this time Wawasee took the early lead and went up 5-3.
However, Wawasee's lead was fleeting. Whitko came from behind to score three points in a row to make the score 6-5, and never looked back.
At one point, Wawasee was behind by only two points with a 10-8 score, but Whitko quickly stifled its hopes of a victory by scoring four points in a row, making the score 14-8.
The Warriors had one last chance to come from behind, but they failed to score, turning possession over to Whitko. After Whitko won the last volley, the score was 15-8.
"We had a goal today," said McCammon. "Our goal was to put a team away in two games. The girls came out and did their job tonight and put (Wawasee) away in two games."
"We played flat tonight," said Fleming. "We passed pretty well and played decent defense, but consistency has been a problem off and on this season."
Both coaches felt that their teams played good volleyball, but they are looking to the future.
"Our goal in the near future is to get all our players healthy," said Fleming. "(Shanna) Zolman went down tonight and (Jennifer) Mason is still nursing an ankle injury, so we want everyone to get healthy.
"Our goal for the season is to play consistent volleyball as we push into tournament time.
"Our ultimate goal is to win sectionals," said McCammon. "The team sat down at the beginning of the year and made that one of our team goals."
Angie Beer led the Warriors with five kills and 13 digs. Sara Frantz led the team with eight assists, and Zolman had three blocks. Gennie Brissette and Mason pitched in with nine and six digs, respectively.
Wawasee now sports a record of 8-19 overall, while Whitko is 6-15. [[In-content Ad]]
