In its second to last game of the regular season, Warsaw may have taken a few steps back heading into sectional play

The Tigers looked out of sorts on both offense and defense as they fell to NorthWood in Northern Lakes Conference play Saturday night 43-35 in the Tiger Den Saturday night

Warsaw came into the game banged up as guard and leading scorer Julie Seiss is still nursing a sore shoulder.

Forward Tasia Smith returned to the Warsaw lineup after sustaining a broken nose and wore a protective mask.

Sophomore Kate Denlinger started in place of Smith.

Reserve Kacie Conley also played despite a collision during Thursday's game at South Bend Adams.

But perhaps the most servere blow Warsaw sustained was a performance against NorthWood that saw the Tigers commit 21 turnovers.

Warsaw gave up 17 points off turnovers compared to just eight given up by the Panthers, a fact not lost on Tiger head coach John Snyder.

"They had 17 points off turnovers while we had eight. That's a plus-nine advantage for them and that's the game," said Snyder.

The Tigers turned the ball over nine times in the second quarter as NorthWood outscored Warsaw 11-7 to take a 17-16 halftime advantage.

Seiss spent most of the first half on the bench as she picked up three personal fouls.

The 5-foot-9 guard, who is headed to Butler this fall, never got going and finished with just eight points on 3-of-7 shooting.

"I wanted Julie to take more shots," said Snyder "We just didn't do a good job of getting her the ball."

Warsaw had to deal with an aggressive zone defense by NorthWood.

While the Tigers were able to penetrate the zone at times they either turned the ball over or failed to take advantage of open shots.

Warsaw actually outshot the Panthers 13 of 31 (42 percent) to 12 of 35 (34 percent) but were just 5 of 10 from the charity stripe to NorthWood's 16 of 24

Amy Abbitt led the way for Warsaw with 10 points as she was the only Tiger to finish in double digits.

The duo of Amanda Bechtel and Mandy Yoder led the way for the Panthers with 18 and 14 points respectively.

Yoder's nine points in the second quarter helped NorthWood take the lead.

Warsaw regained the lead at 23-19 in the third quarter after Snyder sat all five starters to shake things up.

Yoder then scored five straight points to give NorthWood a 24-23 lead after three quarters.

The win was NorthWood's eighth in a row as it moves to 14-4 overall and 4-2 in the NLC. It was also the 494th career win for head coach Steve Neff, who was recognized before the game by Snyder for his recent election to the Indiana Girls Basketball Hall of Fame.

Warsaw fell to 12-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Tigers are now tied for third place with the Panthers in the NLC.

Snyder and Co. end the regular season at home Thursday against Elkhart Memorial. Thursday also marks Warsaw's senior night. The Tigers have six seniors on this year's roster.

Warsaw will take on a Memorial squad that is 15-4 in the season and 5-1 in the NLC. The Chargers are currently on a six-game winning streak.
