Sluggish Shooting Leads To Tiger Sectional Loss
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
The Warsaw-Columbia City matchup in the first round of the Warsaw Sectional has been the talk of the town since the sectional draw January 28. When it came down to it Tuesday night, the game did not live up to the hype surrounding it.
Columbia City took advantage of less-than-stellar Tiger shooting to pick up a 58-38 win over Warsaw and advance to the semifinal round of the sectional against Wawasee Friday night.
But the final score was not indicative of the first half play in the game.
Warsaw jumped out to an early lead after Jaclyn Leininger, Michelle DeGeeter and Janna Knisely joined forces to score the first five points of the game and give Warsaw a 5-0 advantage.
However, that lead was short-lived. Columbia City's Mallory Faylor and Kara Davisson scored five straight points to knot the score at 5-all.
But Warsaw fought back. Hilary O'Connell netted two baskets to give Warsaw a four-point lead with 4:10 left in the first frame.
Warsaw kept fighting and held a 12-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was a different story. Faylor, Shelbie Schuman and Dana Roberts led Columbia City on a 7-0 run to open the second quarter and build a 16-12 lead halfway through the second frame.
Warsaw got close to Columbia City, cutting the lead to as little as two at one point, but the Eagles held on to the lead through the rest of the quarter and the game.
At the half, Columbia City held a 22-17 lead and the Eagles extended that advantage in the third.
Faylor opened the third quarter with a three-pointer, and Beth Moore increased Columbia City's lead to 29-17.
The Eagles continued their offensive assault from that point on. At the end of the third, Columbia City was up 38-25, and midway through the fourth it held a 47-31 lead.
O'Connell led the Tigers with 16 points, while Leininger added 13. In all, Warsaw finished the game hitting just 36.2 percent from the field.
"Obviously we did not shoot the ball well," said Wienhorst. "We came out and took a 5-0 lead, but a couple things happened and they tied it up. I thought we were OK at the half, only down 22-17 after shooting poorly, but our shooting woes continued in the second half. We couldn't get the ball in the basket to save our lives."
Senior Janna Knisely, one of Warsaw's leaders on the court, was neutralized after picking up three fouls early in the first half and then picking up her fourth early in the second half.
"It hurt having Janna on the bench," said Wienhorst. "There was a critical call early in the third quarter when Janna and Faylor went up for a rebound and Knisely was called for her fourth foul. The call could have gone either way, but it was on Janna, and that hurt us."
Warsaw ends the season 17-4 overall, while Columbia City improves to 16-5 and moves on to play Wawasee in the sectional semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday.

Wawasee Advances To Sectional Semifinal
By Jen Gibson, Times-Union Sports Editor
"We've got one out of the way, now it's time to get in our groove," said Wawasee coach Kem Zolman after the Warriors' 64-35 win over East Noble in the first round of the Warsaw Sectional Tuesday night.
"Now we've got our first game under our belt and we've gotten some of the nerves out," Zolman said. "I still think the thought of that Concordia game last year was in our heads."
While the Warriors did not play their best game of the season, they were able to advance to the semifinal round of the sectional where they will play Columbia City Friday night at 6 p.m.
In Tuesday night's game, East Noble and Wawasee traded baskets for the first couple minutes of play, but at the 5:12 mark a Shanna Zolman three-pointer lit a spark under Wawasee.
From that point, the Warriors outscored East Noble 14-4 to end the quarter with a 23-10 lead.
But make no mistake, the first quarter belonged to Shanna. She hit 7 of 10 baskets, including 5 of 7 three-pointers. She also pulled down three rebounds and nabbed a steal.
But East Noble fought back in the second quarter. The Knights outscored the Warriors 15-10 in the second frame before Shanna was fouled on a three-point shot at the buzzer.
So with zeroes showing on the clock, Shanna stepped to the line and sank three free throws to make the score 36-25 at the half.
After the halftime break, Wawasee had a renewed energy. The Warrior defense held East Noble to just two points in the third quarter and 10 points in the entire second half. The Warrior offense stepped up and scored 28 points in the final two quarters of play.
"In the second half, my team really picked up the defense," said Shanna.
In all, Shanna netted 34 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and grabbed six steals. Meagan Wallen, who was hampered by early foul trouble, scored nine points for the Warriors. Jessica Henderson had eight points for Wawasee.
"I'm really proud of Jessica Henderson," said Kem Zolman. "She stepped it up tonight and played very well for us. "
The first-round sectional win improves Wawasee's record to 22-2 overall. The Warriors hope to get in a better groove as they face Columbia City Friday night in the sectional semifinal. Columbia City defeated the Warriors 71-68 earlier in the season.
"We are taking things one game at a time," said Shanna. "This was not our best game, but we will keep improving for Friday."

Plymouth Defense Handcuffs Whitko Girls
By Dale Hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer
PLYMOUTH - When the pairings came out last week for Tuesday's Plymouth 3A Sectional, Whitko girls basketball coach Mike Sands knew little about the host Pilgrims.
In a 63-26 loss, Sands and his Wildcats found out more than they cared to know.
The Pilgrims, last year's 3A state runner-up, handcuffed Whitko with a stifling defense and got strong inside play from junior Sarah Craig and senior Lindsay Houin en route to the 37-point win.
What Sands did know about Plymouth was the strength of its defense, a defense that held Whitko to two points in the second quarter and nine in the first half.
"Plymouth plays very aggressive defense," Sands said. "We got shook up. Once we got shook up we got out of control."
The Pilgrims improved to 15-7 with the win and will meet Kankakee Valley (13-8) at 6 p.m. Friday in the semifinal round. Kankakee Valley, led by 6-foot-6 junior Amanda Devries, downed Culver Girls Academy 66-47. Tippecanoe Valley and Knox will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the bye game.
With the loss, Whitko finishes its season at 6-15 and losers in five of the last six.
Plymouth quickly jumped out to a 10-2 lead and went into the second stanza with an 18-7 advantage.
The Pilgrims started the second quarter with a 10-0 run, holding Whitko scoreless until the 1:31 mark when sophomore Dana Sellers scored the Wildcats' only two points of the quarter to make it 28-9.
Due in large part to poor shooting from the field, Whitko trailed 32-9 at halftime.
The Wildcats were 4 of 19 from the field in the first half and 11 of 37 for the game, including a 4-of-13 effort from the arc.
"We just couldn't hit anything," Sands said. "We couldn't get the ball in the hole. This is probably the strongest defense we've gone up against. We couldn't get a (foul) call either, but that's part of the game."
Plymouth finished the game with eight fouls, while the Wildcats had 19 whistled on them.
After only scoring nine in the first half Whitko put 17 points on the board in the second half, but giving up 18 points in the third quarter alone the Wildcats trailed by 25 or more much of the way.
Craig led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while Houin added 14 and freshman reserve Stacey Wendel 10.
Senior Teri Walter paced the Wildcats with eight, while Sellers added six, Jennifer Wendel five, Angela Trump four and Christa Badskey three.

Wawasee Advances To Sectional Semifinal
