Sluggish Offense Leads To Tiger Loss

After his Warsaw girls basketball team soundly defeated Tippecanoe Valley 102-63 in its season opener, coach Will Weinhorst said he had a team that could put some points on the board.
In that game the Tigers set a school record for most points in a game and most points in a quarter. Warsaw used a 29-of-63 shooting performance from the field to do so.
In Warsaw's second game of the season, the Tigers cruised past Bremen 75-41 on 26-of-60 shooting.
Wienhorst was right, he had a team that could score points. Warsaw came into Friday's contest with visiting Crown Point averaging 88.5 points per game.
The third game wasn't a charm as the Bulldogs clipped the Tigers 52-47. Crown Point now boasts a winning record of 3-2 after the win. Warsaw falls to 2-1 on the season.
Warsaw's high-octane offense shot a dismal 15 of 50 from the field last night, and managed to put just four points on the board in the entire third quarter, all coming at the charity stripe.
After last night's five-point loss, Wienhorst was asked about his team's offense. He still insisted that his team could put points on the board.
"We're a team looking for identity," said Wienhorst. "It's not that we didn't have the shots. I can't tell you how many open looks we had. That doesn't mean that we can't score, we are gonna score some points. Crown Point is good but it wasn't their defense, we couldn't hit our shots."
When Wienhorst says he team couldn't hit its shots, again he was right.
After the Tigers led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter and trailed 30-26 at halftime, Warsaw didn't connect on a field goal opportunity until senior Jenna Rooney put an end to the Tigers' offensive drought with a basket at the 6:42 mark of the final frame that made the count 40-32 in Crown Point's favor.
This period of the game is where Wienhorst says his team lost.
"I think the bottom line in this game was the last three minutes of the first half when we got outscored 14-4," said Wienhorst. "Then we didn't score a field goal in the third quarter, that was the game."
Crown Point's Sarah Zondor led all scorers with 20 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Twelve of her game-high points came in the first half. Alex Webster, with her 13 points, was the only other Bulldog in double-figures.
Rooney and Christy Colt led the Tigers with 13 points apiece. Senior Sara Parker was the next highest scorer with six points.
Warsaw's bench did outscore Crown Point's 18-13. And 18 is the number that Wienhorst said was also a huge factor in the game. This was the number of points the Bulldogs scored off Warsaw turnovers.
Warsaw committed 20 turnovers to fuel Crown Point's offense. The Bulldogs faltered with the ball just one less time but Warsaw scored a mere four points off turnovers.
And it all reverts back to Warsaw's shooting performance, because like Wienhorst said, Warsaw had scoring opportunities, the Tigers just couldn't hit their shots.
"Look at our shooting," said Wienhorst, "it's unbelievable. And nobody had more than two assists. That means they're not taking the ball to the hole.
Crown Point made just one more shot from the field but only took 38 shots, a field goal percentage of 42.1. The Tigers shot 30 percent from the field.
Crown Point also outshot Warsaw at the charity stripe. For the game the Bulldogs made good on 16 of 27 (59.3 percent) free throws. Warsaw finished the game 12 of 20 (60 percent) at the charity stripe, but at one point in the first half were 3 of 9.
In Warsaw's first two games combined the Tigers were 53 of 76 at the free throw line.
Warsaw (2-1) will be at Huntington North Dec. 2 with the junior varsity tipping off at 6:15 p.m.
"Crown Point has lost two games," said Wienhorst, "they know how that hurts. Their practices have been hard because girls don't like to lose. It's gonna come down to how hard we want to work. We could easily be 2-2." [[In-content Ad]]
