Skins Spoil Warsaw's Homecoming
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
While seniors Nate Click and Jill Kreinbrink were crowned king and queen at Warsaw Community High School's homecoming Friday night, Shane Parson and Najee Slade proved to be royalty for the Goshen Redskins.
Led by Parson, a senior quarterback, and Slade, a junior running back, the Redskins handed the Tigers a 34-10 loss at Fisher Field.
The loss dropped Warsaw to 0-4 in the Northern Lakes Conference and 1-5 overall, marking the first time the Tigers have lost five consecutive games in the regular season since starting the 1988 campaign 0-5 under then first-year coach Ted Huber.
The 24-point win improved interim coach David Wilson's Redskins to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the NLC.
The Tigers are the only team in the NLC without a conference win this season.
"I'm disappointed in our performance," said third-year Warsaw coach Troy Akers. "The rest of the NLC is looking good and we're not."
Parson finished the game 14 of 24 through the air for 221 yards and three touchdowns. He threw one interception, a pass picked off by Warsaw senior Justin Hanson.
Slade, who entered Friday's conference matchup averaging 99 yards rushing per game, carried the ball 29 times for 144 yards. He rushed 16 times for 100 yards in the first half.
"We bottled him up at the beginning of the game," Akers said of Slade. "He's the type of kid that as he gets more carries he gets confidence. They gashed us with draws and counters after we did a pretty good job early in the game."
Slade also turned a screen pass into a 43-yard touchdown, giving the Redskins a 31-10 lead after Alex Aguilar's extra-point kick with 11:05 remaining.
Aguilar scored the final three points of the game with 49 seconds remaining when he made good on a 44-yard field goal. He also converted a 34-yard field goal with 1:49 left in the third quarter, giving the Redskins a 24-10 advantage.
Goshen amassed 384 yards of offense to Warsaw's 224.
The Tigers rushed for 78 yards and passed for 146 yards.
"Offensively, it was the same old, same old for us," said Akers. "I'm disappointed in our performance. We had a good crowd. This community has supported us. I take responsibility for that. It's my job. I thought the kids were ready to go, I guess they weren't."
After Goshen took the opening kickoff and drove 80 yards in 13 plays, taking 5:10 off the clock, Warsaw's first possession ended with a three-and-out situation.
To make matters worse, Goshen's Justin Blosser returned Scott Harman's punt 36 yards, giving the Redskins the ball on Warsaw's 49-yard line.
After stopping Slade for no gain on first down, Justin Hanson picked off an errant Parson pass, giving the Tigers the ball on Goshen's 40-yard line.
Junior Ben Higgins, making his second varsity start at quarterback, threw a 37-yard pass to senior Chas Simpson on first down, and three plays later senior Tommy Reinholt powered his way in from three yards out.
Freshman Matt Franco's extra-point kick tied the game at 7-all with 1:43 remaining in the first quarter.
While it looked as if the Tigers had some momentum offensively, that just wasn't the case.
Warsaw turned the ball over four times, three fumbles and an interception thrown by Higgins.
The Redskins pushed the lead to 21-7 with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Parson to Blosser and a five-yard run by Jacob Drudge.
Franco converted a 22-yard field goal with 6:39 remaining in the third quarter, cutting Goshen's lead to 21-10.
The Redskins turned the ball over twice in the game, the interception to Hanson and a fumble recovered by Andrew Krallman.
Higgins finished the game 7 of 14 through the air for 88 yards with an interception. Senior Tyler Akers played quarterback for much of the fourth quarter and completed 1 of 4 passes for 15 yards.
Freshman Justin Clemens finished the game at quarterback, giving Tiger fans a glimpse of the future.
The 6-foot-3, 212 pound underclassmen completed 3 of 4 passes for 43 yards.
Simpson led Warsaw's receivers with six catches for 87 yards.
Ben Davis carried the ball 14 times for Warsaw for 44 yards.
Blosser led Goshen with a game-high eight catches for 100 yards, while Martin caught two passes for 30 yards and Ortiz caught two passes for 22 yards.
Warsaw is in action Friday at county rival Wawasee, with the winner taking home the "W" Trophy.
Wawasee, which improved to 5-1 on the season with a 31-29 win over previously unbeaten Plymouth, has won three straight over the Tigers.
