Silver Lake Still Studying Storm Water Project

SILVER LAKE - Although Silver Lake did not receive a grant for a storm sewer project, the town will still look into fixing current problems.

Tuesday night its regular meeting, the Silver Lake Town Council announced that the town did not receive a $1 million federal grant to repair storm sewers.

A representative from GRW Engineers, Scott Dompke, attended the meeting and said his company would like to try to keep the project going in some form. A meeting will be set up with Dompke, a council member, grant administrator Bob Murphy, and town superintendent Jasun Blocher to discuss possible alternatives for the project.[[In-content Ad]]Dompke said there may be additional federal grant monies available for such a project.

"(GRW Engineers) would like to help however we can," said Dompke.

Later in the meeting, the council approved a motion to donate the town's old truck to the fire department. Before council members voted, Town Clerk Angie Glass expressed concern about the cost of the truck's upkeep.

"I am concerned only from a financial standpoint," Glass said, adding that the town replaced the truck instead of continuing to make repairs on it. She was concerned that if the truck was given to the fire department, the town still will have to pay for the repairs.

Blocher said that there is nothing major wrong with the truck mechanically. The truck will be driven only about 50 miles per year for the fire department compared to 250-300 per week as the town utility truck.

The cost of converting the truck to a fire vehicle with lights and other equipment will be covered by the township.

The council approved a motion to donate the truck to the fire department. The truck's title will be transferred to reflect the change.

In other business, the council:

n Discussed the relocation of signs put up by the Silver Lake Lions Club. The club asked if they could attach the signs to the new welcome signs. However, the new town signs are not designed to have other signs added. The council gave permission to the Lions Club to put their signs on a post in front of the town signs, below the writing level of the town signs.

n Tabled a decision about having a fall cleanup day. In years past, the town has had a fall cleanup day, usually in September or October. Since funds are tight this year, there may not be money in the budget to pay for a fall cleanup. Glass told the board that because of budget cuts normal trash pickup will put the town in the red without adding the cleanup day. She said she will look at the town's funds and see if there is another fund the money can come from.

n Heard that the town received a request for a donation for the 9/11 Remembrance Memorial planned for the courthouse lawn. The letter was received Monday, and the board tabled a motion regarding the donation until next month. Glass will see if there are funds available for the donation.

n Heard that the town was approved for the grant for the new town truck. The full $35,370 was approved to pay for the truck.

n Announced that Multi-Township EMS will no longer be the town's emergency service provider after this year. LifeMed will take up residence at the fire station and provide emergency services for Silver Lake residents.

n Heard that the Day of Caring is Aug. 26. Volunteers are still needed to help in the town. For more information or to volunteer, contact Glass, Craig Hollopeter or Tonya Conley at the town office.
