SILVER LAKE – The Silver Lake Town Council announced Thursday night the town will host its spring clean-up day May 17 instead of on the previously scheduled date of May 24.
Residents are asked to prepare a 6-feet-by-6-feet area and leave out items they wish the town to take away. Residents are not permitted to leave out tires, computers, televisions and other electronics and anything containing freon.
Silver Lake Volunteer Fire Department Chief John Conley also announced during Thursday’s meeting the department will host a hog roast fundraiser May 24 from 3 to 6 p.m or until sold out. Along with the hog, baked beans, coleslaw, hot dogs and beverages will be served.
Cost is $7 to dine-in or carry-out or $10 by the pound. Kids under 12 eat for $5.
There will be a silent auction for a pair of Holiday World tickets ending at 5:30 p.m. and a corn hole tournament starting at 3:30 p.m. Registration for the tournament ends at 3:15 p.m. and cost is $30 per person. First-place prize is 50 percent of entry fees.
There will also be a 50/50 drawing with a cost of $1 per ticket or six tickets for $5.
In other business, the town council discussed utilities billing and how the meters may sometimes be read wrong by the current software system. Tonya Conley, Silver Lake clerk-treasurer, said some residents have seen bills double, triple and even quadruple from reading to reading. The board suggested looking for a new software system to read meters and moved to adjust affected bills by averaging resident bills from last year.
The council also discussed the Indiana  Blithe Program, a program that sets aside money to allow for abandoned property demolition in cities and towns. Kosciusko County has approximately $8 million set aside for demolitions and the board is investigating steps to take to access some of that money in order to demolish abandoned properties in Silver Lake.
The next council meeting is scheduled for May 14 at 7 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
