Silver Lake Hears Report On Iron Removal Unit
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
SILVER LAKE - Donald Morrison, Ecologistics Limited's senior environmental engineer, West Lafayette, examined Silver Lake's iron removal unit and presented the findings Tuesday to the town council.
The unit, which removes iron from water, is expected to last 30 years, said Morrison. Silver Lake's unit lasted 34 years. Now the tank is leaking.
"I couldn't recommend repairing the tank. I think it's throwing good money to bad - well, I think you've got to replace it," said Morrison.
Ecologistics Limited offered a $180,000 bid for a 450-gallon tank and its installation. At the council's request, Morrison offered a bid from another company for $170,000.
Morrison recommended a new 450-gallon tank instead of replacing the current 150-gallon tank. Silver Lake's water consumption has increased by 5 percent annually. Morrison forecasted an increase in iron removal because of the water usage. A bigger filter will be needed in about eight or nine years, he said.
Repairs would fix the current leaks. But side walls, being as thick as the bottom plate, should be leaking soon, said Morrison.
"It would be to our advantage to go bigger," said council president Brenda Wadkins. "No one's water bill is going up," she said.
The council passed the issue unanimously.
In other business, the council:
• Heard of Marshal Craig Hollopeter's firing of Kurt D. Owens, former Silver Lake police officer, for insubordination. Owens failed to follow orders, said Hollopeter.
• Accepted a bid from Rick Hernandez, Claypool, to paint Silver Lake's water tower for $1,550. He plans to highlight the letters on the tank now and add a 10-foot-by-18-foot American flag. He will also cover the graffiti on the tower.
• Received another bid on a gazebo from Whitehorse Construction. The bid was $3,500 to build the gazebo on site. At the Oct. 15 meeting, the council accepted a bid for $4,050; delivery was not included.
The council approved the bid, pending a reference check. Whitehorse's gazebo plan is larger than the previous plan.
The Silver Lake Town Council members are: president Brenda Wadkins, Gale Owens, Donna McCune and clerk-treasurer Teresa Howell. [[In-content Ad]]
