Silver Lake Eyes Future Of Old School

SILVER LAKE - Three items were on the agenda at a special meeting in Silver Lake Tuesday night.

While the first two items were taken care of rather quickly, the last item led to more than an hour of discussion and no real conclusion.

The council approved a request to allow an exception to the town's ordinance regarding mobile homes for Robert Landrum. Landrum wants to move a 2000 model Patriot mobile home with vinyl siding and a shingled roof to a lot on North Street. Since the mobile home is more than five years old, the town's ordinance requires that the board must give its approval before it can be moved onto the lot.

The council wanted to see more photos of the structure before making the exception. Landrum presented more photos to the board and they approved the exception unanimously.

Landrum plans to move the mobile home to the lot within the next few weeks.

The council also heard a request from a town resident who asked for permission to set off fireworks on Labor Day. The fireworks will last no more than 10 minutes and there will be no loud noises or cannons. The show will be completed before 10 p.m.

According to town ordinance requires residents to get permission from the town board to set off fireworks on days other than Fourth of July and New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

Then the council tackled the issue of the old Silver Lake School building. Mike Bauer purchased the building from the school corporation and said he wanted to make it a usable space.

However, little progress has been made in the building's repair since that time. Bauer patched the roof and has replaced windows that have gotten broken since the purchase, but no major work has been to the structure.

Bauer said he is disappointed that he has not found a tenant for the building yet, and council members said they were disappointed as well. They added that the building is becoming an eyesore, and the structure is deteriorating since nothing has been done to it.

Bauer said there is interest in the building, and that he wants to see something done with it; however, he said he does not plan to do anything to the building until he has a tenant for it.

Silver Lake Town Council members are Linda Baker, president; Ronald Jones; and Gale Owens. Clerk-treasurer is Angie Glass.[[In-content Ad]]
