Silver Lake Days Festival Friday and Saturday

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

With 35 years of experience in the summer festival business, the town of Silver Lake has developed a tried-and-true business model - “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

So at this weekend’s 35th annual Silver Lake Days Festival, goers can expect much of the same family-friendly events and attractions that have made the summer jubilee the town’s preeminent get-together of the year.

Silver Lake Days Festival will be Friday and Saturday with highlights being a Friday car show and a Saturday parade, as well as a cornhole tournament and an ice cream social.

The main events are events that festival organizer Marlin Carr said are festival mainstays, and with the success that Silver Lake Days Festival has enjoyed for the past 3 1/2 decades, no talk was had in ushering in major changes.

“We have tried different things in the past, but honestly, we continue to operate on the things that are successful for us,” said Carr. “We've tried different things, but other than cornhole, we generally just stick with things that are successful.

“Silver Lake is very small, and the festival is mainly the main things that happens in the whole year. It’s just a good time.”

Carr admitted the parade – held 11 a.m. Saturday – is the highlight of the two-day festival, with the 3 p.m. Friday car show garnering sizeable attention, as well. He said the 1 p.m. Saturday cornhole tournament – in its third year – has grown in popularity annually, as well.

Town garage sales will be both days, and bands will play both nights at 8 p.m. The Silver Lake Lions dunk tank will also be in operation to cool off festival folks.

Carr remained tight-lipped about who will be honored as the parade marshall, a title bestowed upon a resident who showcases a lifetime of good deeds for Silver Lake. The marshall is annually surprised with the honor the morning of the parade, and Carr promised this year’s honoree will be in attendance.

“We're a small town and it means a lot to get that award,” said Carr. “They’ll be there, even if we have to lie to them to get them there.”
