On May 1, the town received a grant for its sediment removal plan which is the first step necessary to dredge the lake. This grant is from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
They will proceed by filing for a dredging grant next year. The town approved using the services of Sediment Removal Solutions. A public information meeting will be held Aug. 26 at 5 p.m. at Silver Lake Town Hall to discuss more details and answer any questions.
The board also discussed the lack of improvements to the old schoolhouse over the last five years. For the building to be demolished, it must be deemed unsafe, but it is made out of brick and it is structurally sound and not presenting any danger currently. The board said it was under the impression this school building would be transformed into a charter school, but that has not happened.
Board President Chad Miner suggested budgeting and possibly in five to 10 years buying the building back. A few residents mentioned possibly turning the structure into a day care, community center, senior center or even a small library. Miner said he was going to call the owner of the property and discuss the matter with him.
The town’s old utility truck was wrecked and has been replaced. It still needs graphics, a plow mount and lights, costing roughly $3,600 for all three items. There is only $1,800 left in the budget, so the board decided to purchase lights for the truck next year. It also suggested looking into a magnetic graphic to reduce costs.
In other business the council:
• Adopted and signed a new flood ordinance.
• Heard repairs were finished to the fire hydrant at the corner of Herendeen Street and Ind. 14 and a few parts are awaited for others.
• Heard Sonfest, a free event, will be held Aug. 29 from noon to 4 p.m. at Gospel Hill Church.
The next regular meeting is at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 in the Town Hall.
