SILVER LAKE - Residents and businesses in Silver Lake could soon have broadband Internet service.

Lance German, a representative from Network Computer Solutions in Warsaw, addressed the Silver Lake Town Council Tuesday and inquired about leasing space on the town's water tower. The company wants to put three or four small antennas on top of the water tower to provide broadband Internet service to Silver Lake and surrounding areas.

"Basically (the antennas) blend in with the tower," said German.

German presented the council with a lease agreement that entitles the town to $1 per foot of tower height per month, amounting to around $100 to $120 per month for the next five years.

The council approved the lease 3-0 pending the approval of town attorney Vern Landis.

Then the council heard that a bridge project approved in December is now on hold because the state requires more detailed drawings of the project.

"It was denied because there is no detailed blueprint," said town manager Phil Shalley.

The town approved getting an estimate from Larry Long, an engineer in Warsaw, for drawing the blueprints for the project. The town already has the materials needed to fix the bridge at the Lion's Club Building on Ind. 14 near Elm Street. The delay will push the finishing date for the project back to June or July.

Quotes for repairs to the gazebo at Memorial Park were read at the meeting, but council members decided to table the item until they can look into the process for a new gazebo. The current gazebo has been repaired once and is in need of repairs again. Estimates to fix the structure ranged from $2,400 to $4,200, and council members think they may be able to find a new one for a similar price.

The board also decided to place a sealed bid on a chipper/shredder in Logansport. The machine has been sitting unused for eight to 10 years, but town council president Ronald Jones and Shalley looked at it and said everything seemed to be loose and in working order.

"It looks like with a little loving care, she'd take right off," said Jones.

The council approved placing a $300 bid on the equipment. The bid must be received by 2 p.m. March 17.

In other business, the town council:

• Heard a request for new fire suits for four rookie members of the fire department who will be off probationary training later this year. The town tabled a decision until they can discuss the matter with the township board. The groups may split the cost of the suits.

• Heard that the fire department needs a new chopsaw. The current chopsaw is approximately 20 years old and is difficult to find replacement parts for. Fire Chief Robby Clark will get more estimates for the equipment and will present the numbers at the next council meeting.

• Approved vacation for Craig Hollopeter April 4-7 and Phil Shalley Aug 31-Sept. 7.

• Approved a sewer adjustment for Louis Eastham, who had a water leak at his home.
