Silver Lake Considering Golf Cart Ordinance

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

SILVER LAKE - Soon residents of Silver Lake will be able to legally drive golf carts on town streets.

Tuesday night at its regular meeting, the Silver Lake Town Council heard a reading of a draft for Ordinance 08-01-10 regarding golf cart use on town streets.

The ordinance sets rules for golf cart use, such as operators must have a valid driver's license, cart may only be driven between sunrise and sunset, and the cart must have a slow moving vehicle sign or a red-amber flashing light.

Once the ordinance is approved and takes effect, drivers of golf carts must comply with all traffic laws, and they may only be operated on town streets, not state highways. The ordinance does allow golf carts to cross state highways, but the vehicles may not be driven on them.

Those operating golf carts must have proof of financial responsibility.

In other business, the council:

n Heard a presentation from Kim Nance about the Kosciusko Economic Development Corporation, formerly known as Kosciusko Development Inc. Nance said KEDC focuses on the retention of current business, attracting new business and facilitating growth in existing businesses. She talked about some of the functions of the entity and also said Kosciusko County recently raised $100,000 and now will be part of a JumpStart study to help businesses and entrepreneurs.

n Heard information about a mobile home that Robert Landrum wants to move onto a lot on North Street. Since the mobile home is more than five years old, the town's ordinance requires that the board must give its approval before it can be moved onto the lot.

The mobile home is a 2000 Patriot model with vinyl siding, skirting and a roof that was shingled in 2002. According to Landrum, the 14X68 home has good plumbing and has been very well taken care of.

Since the mobile home currently is in Detroit, Mich., Landrum presented a few photos to the board, and said he could get more this week. The board said they wanted to see more photos before they would grant the exemption for the mobile home.

The board will meet Aug. 24 at 5 p.m. in the town hall to make a decision on the exemption.

n Discussed the current condition of the Silver Lake School Building. Board members are concerned that the building will be come an eyesore, and they would like to speak to the building's owner, Mike Bower.

"I feel he has a responsibility to answer to us," said council president Linda Baker.

n Heard that there has been a problem with people blowing their grass clippings into the road in town. When it rains, the grass that is blown to the road then gathers and plugs storm water drains. Town officials are asking people to try to avoid blowing grass, especially tall grass, into the streets.

n Heard that Gospel Hill Church will once again host its family fun day Aug. 28 from noon to 4 p.m. There will be many family-friendly activities that are free for children at the event.
