SILVER LAKE - Marcus Cable customers will bear the cost of improvements as the company upgrades their cable television system, according to information presented by representatives Peter Lascomb and Tim Ransberger.

The men appeared at the town council meeting Tuesday night with an outline explaining that miles of fiber optic cable will be laid from Warsaw toward Silver Lake.

Cost of the upgrade is about $328,000, or approximately $1,190 per customer. Rates for basic service, channels 2 through 22, will remain at $9.13. Cable Showcase, which will include 16 new channels, will be increased from $14.52 to $20.32, an increase of $5.80. Full basic cable will increase from $23.65 to $29.45, converters will go from $1.43 to $1.75, and remotes will increase 20 cents, from $.18 to $.38.

The rate changes will be effective in June.

Board members Mabel Enyeart, Stanley Williams and Wilbur Brake approved Resolution 99-04-01 on first reading, suspending the second and third readings. The $290,000 bond issue allows the water system installation work to continue.

John Julian of H.J. Umbaugh explained the issue will be made available on the open market for bidding. This finishes the second phase of financing for the infrastructure project.

In other business the board:

• Approved the request of Rex Clinker, Silver Lake Days committee, to close certain streets during the festival.

• Designated cleanup day as May 14.

• Heard a report by utilities manager Phil Shalley that the Indiana Department of Transportation will not remove or change the limited parking signs on Jefferson (Ind. 15) and Main streets.

The signs prohibit parking on Jefferson Street between Walnut and Sycamore streets and on Main Street between High and Elm streets from 2 to 5 a.m.

• Approved hiring a person part-time to mow town property.

• Discussed work that could be done by people sentenced to community service.

• Accepted the quote of $1,469.82 for installation of an 8-inch sanitary sewer pipe from Columbia Street to a pond.

• Heard a report by Jeff McKean of Triad Engineering regarding the water line installation. He said 45 percent of the work is complete and expects construction to end on schedule with a June 30 completion date.

• Approved the quote of Ron Miller to paint the fire station at a cost of $2,390.

• Heard that the Full Gospel Pentecostal Church basement was flooded Monday afternoon and town workers pumped water for three hours.

Shalley said the water came in through a floor drain but doesn't know where the leak occurred.

• Heard from clerk-treasurer Fern Strong, who tendered her resignation, effective April 30. [[In-content Ad]]
