Joe and Saundra Graham, 406 N. High St., opposed the annexation of their property into the town limits. The Grahams asked the council what the advantages of being annexed were.
The council stated that they would receive the town's water and sewer.
"I don't want your water," said Joe Graham. "And I don't need your sewer."
Saundra Graham asked if they were annexed if they had to get rid of farm animals they had. The council said when annexed, the Grahams would have to abide by all town ordinances.
Saundra Graham asked what their next step was to block the annexation. Silver Lake Town Attorney Vern Landis advised them to seek the council of an attorney.
Wabash Valley Manufacturing also was annexed into Silver Lake.
Jim Haney, vice president of operations for Wabash Valley Manufacturing, was at the meeting and stated that the business was opposed to the annexation.
"We already pay our fair share in sewer and water," said Haney
When a resident at the meeting asked whether being annexed and having to pay more taxes would force Wabash Valley out of Silver Lake, Haney said "I can't answer that.
"We're in business to make a profit," said Haney.
Both Haney and the Grahams contended they already paid for water and sewer and that there were no advantages to being annexed.
The council passed the annexation ordinance with a 2-1 vote. Gary Kneller and Stanley Williams voted for the ordinance, and Ron Jones voted against it. The ordinance will go into effect 90 days after its publication.
The council also heard from Deb Korn who asked why an officer or town official couldn't let her know in person if she was in violation of a town ordinance in conjunction with a certified letter that is sent out.
The council stated that was the town's policy, and Williams said they "have to treat everyone the same."
Korn said she was sorry for allowing weeds to grow on her property, which violated a town ordinance, but she said she felt a certified letter in the mail wasn't needed.
The council also heard from Silver Lake Fire Chief Jasun Blocher, street department's Phil Shalley and Silver Lake Town Marshal Craig Hollopeter.
The council also announced there would be a Republican caucus Monday at 6 p.m. at the conservation building. There will be seven candidates vying for three open council seats.
The next Silver Lake Town meeting will be Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at the town hall.
There will be a public hearing Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. at the town hall concerning the 2008 budget.
