He was born March 4, 1931, in Armstrong County, Pa., to Daniel and Vernie Whitaker McKain. On Oct. 1, 1972, in Tennessee, he married Joan L. Foreman Sears, who survives.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He served from 1949-52 and from 1954 until his retirement in 1972. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1343, Rochester, and several other veteran associations.
Surviving are a daughter, Heather Renee McKain, Akron; a son, Patrick Neal McKain, Radcliff, Ky.; four stepdaughters: Brenda Marie (and husband Barry) Gardner, Lawrenceville, Ga.; Mary Lea (and spouse Wendell) Couch, Edenburg; Deborah Oneita (and spouse Cryil) Hiestand and Leona Jean (and spouse Jim) Douglas, all of Union City, Ohio; a stepson: Frank Sears, Brazil; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron, with Pastor Terry Canfield officiating and with military rites by members of the LeRoy Shelton American Legion Post 36 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1343 Honor Guard, Rochester. Burial will be in Akron Cemetery.
Calling is from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
