This is in response to the recent letter from Howard Prater regarding the sheriff's salary.

Mr. Prater,[[In-content Ad]]Unlike you I live in Kosciusko County and pay Kosciusko County taxes. I also saw the sheriff's salary and I think it is too low. My opinion is we do not pay our law enforcement, fire department and emergency medical personnel enough. I would much rather see my tax dollars pay the salaries of those who protect us and our property, and are willing to put their life on the line to do so. I also disagree that the current financial problems are a result of overpaying the sheriff and other law enforcement personnel.

In case you haven't noticed, there are many communities, counties and states having financial difficulties. This I believe is a direct reflection of the current economic times. As unemployment increases and businesses shut down there is less tax revenue received at the same time more public services are requested. Tough decisions have to be made.

Although Kosciusko County is having some challenges, there are many other counties with much larger financial problems. I know some of our county commissioners and councilmen and I do not envy their job. They may not always make a decision with which I agree, but I have never questioned their intent or desire to do what is best for the community.
