NORTH WEBSTER – Organizers of Shanna Zolman’s homecoming talk in North Webster next month hope she can inspire other small-town kids to think big.
Zolman, 31, a Women’s National Basketball Association record-holder who grew up in Syracuse, will speak May 2 at  the North Webster Community Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the talk begins at 7 p.m., with dessert afterward provided by The Cake Lady.
The event is a fundraiser for the community center. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children, and are available at the NWCC, Wawasee High School and Milford Middle School. Tickets also are available online through a link provided at www.nwcommunitycenter.com
About 35 area businesses and organizations helped sponsor the talk, said Erin Smith, NWCC director of operations.
“We’re excited to have her come here and talk about her experiences, how growing up in a small town contributed to her success,” Smith said. “And how she can excite our youth, show them that growing up in a small town is not necessarily a bad thing.”
Playing for the Lady Warriors in high school, Zolman scored a state-record 3,085 points and averaged 33.2 points per game. She continued to excel as a Lady Volunteer at the University of Tennessee, setting records including single game three-pointers – seven – and single season three-pointers – 103.
She was drafted by the San Antonio Silver Stars in 2006, starting a four-year WNBA career during which she scored a career-high 18 points in a rookie season game against Phoenix Mercury.
Off the court, she volunteered with Race for the Cure, the Muscular Dystrophy Association and other organizations. She now does ministry and mentoring with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, saying in a 2011 talk to National Christian College Athletic Association players in Winona Lake that her faith was a constant throughout her career.
Smith said student athletes and church youth group members are encouraged to attend.
“We’re working closely with athletic departments to get the coaches to bring their teams,” she said.
Other upcoming NWCC fundraisers include a table at the North Webster town garage sale Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m, Smith added. The NWCC is also holding a raffle for a 15-foot Starcraft Alaskan fishing boat with a motor and trailer, donated by Griffith's Wawasee Marina.
Tickets are $20 apiece, three for $50 or six for $100, and only 600 will be sold, she said. They are available at the community center and at several area businesses.
“Then we’ll get into action mode and start planning and prepping for the fall auction,” Smith said.[[In-content Ad]]
