Seven Teachers, Nurse Retire from Wawasee

SYRACUSE – Wawasee schools will see some new faces heading up classes next fall as seven teachers and a nurse are retiring, most of them from Wawasee Middle School.
“And,” said Superintendent Tom Edington at Tuesday night’s board meeting, “the cutoff date for submitting requests is still a few weeks away.”
Leaving the middle school are Elaine Bokhart, David Eldridge, Darcy Hively, Jay Smith, Rick Bauer and Sallie Hoy. Cayle Woodard has submitted his letter of retirement from Milford School, where he has been teaching industrial technology, and nurse Allene Dewart will also be leaving that school.
Board member Mary Lou Dixon, who also is retired from teaching at the middle school, commented on the years of experience represented by those leaving now. Edington added, “You taught with some of them, didn’t you?”
Two math teachers are being transferred from their current positions to new ones at Wawasee Middle School. Hans Griepentrog will leave the high school to teach eighth-grade math and Trent Beer,  now an eighth-grade math teacher, will move to the social studies department.
Physical changes are also coming. Robert E. Crosby Inc., Fort Wayne, was awarded the $2.3 million bid for work at the athletic fields on the high school campus. A new ticket/concession building and parking spaces are part of the construction plan.
Total cost of the project is $2,363,000 after deductions and additions for alternative projects were figured into the base bid. Edington said other projects will have to be put off this year, such as work at the training room, the areas around the gym and bleachers.
Lunch prices are changing, too, going up five cents from $1.55 to $1.60 for grades kindergarten through fifth, and from $1.70 to $1.75 for grades sixth through 12th; and some changes to the student handbook will clarify the rules. For instance, the rule regarding student athletes at an event where there is alcohol or drugs makes clear, “Upon discovery that illegal consumption of alcohol, illegal or banned substances are present, or any illegal activity is present, an athlete shall refuse to partake and shall leave the premises immediately.” Board attorney David Cates said this alleviates any misunderstanding arising from students at family events where alcohol is not illegal.
New kindergarten students were “rounded-up” recently for Milford School. Teachers Heidi Shock, Katie Young and Jaimi Andrew presented a video they prepared for the annual kindergarten round-up demonstrating the fun and academic activities that are part of the program. Now that kindergarten is full-day, parents and children can view what’s in store for them, they explained.
In other business, the board:
• Awarded certificates to three members of the Ag/FFA horse judging team, Sophia Nyce, Jamaica Ensz and Christy Carson, who recently competed at state level.
• Congratulated WHS English and social students Academic Super Bowl teams for competing at the state level. Members will be presented at the June meeting.
• Announced the 2nd Annual Boomerang Backpacks Golf Outing is scheduled for June 16 at Tippecanoe Golf Club.
• Heard that staff participants in Relay for Life have already raised $1,750.
• Approved a contract with The Crossing for the 2014-2015 school year.
