Serenity House provides a place for those suffering from alcohol and drug addictions to call home.

A grand opening was Saturday at 2016 E. Market St. for the opening of the second recovery home in Warsaw.

Founded in 1994, Serenity House Inc. operates residential homes to help adults recovering from alcohol and drug abuse.

Residents go through a lengthy interview process with the house manager and must follow house rules. The average stay at the home is a year.[[In-content Ad]]The first home opened in Auburn in 1995. Today, Serenity House operates a home for women in Auburn, and four homes for men, two in Warsaw and two in Auburn.

The first home in Warsaw opened in 2006 at 622 E. Fort Wayne St. It houses 16 men recovering from alcohol and drugs.

All residents must be clean and sober for a minimum of 72 hours to be admitted into the recovery program.

The elements of Serenity House are based on the principles, practice and theory of a 12-step recovery.

The new four-bedroom, two-story home on East Market Street will house 12 men in Serenity House's transitional recovery program. At this time the home is at full capacity.

Serenity House began with a land contract in February 2009 on the house at East Market Street with a promise to purchase by June 2009.

The house was purchased for $129,900 through a $40,000 1-1 matching grant from the K21 Health Foundation, a $25,000 grant from Kosciusko Community Foundation, a $5,000 grant from Kosciusko REMC, and a $2,500 donation from Creighton Brothers.

"These generous grants and many other donations allowed us to open the facility with a much smaller mortgage," said Matt Rice, Serenity House executive director.

Since 2006 when the house on East Fort Wayne Street was opened, there has been a waiting list as there are no other residential recovery homes in Kosciusko County, Rice said.

"By having a tiered program, residents begin at the East Fort Wayne Street home where they learn living and recovery skills," Rice said.

If they are successful in that portion of the program, they can transition to the East Market Street home.

"We're so grateful to Kosciusko County for recognizing the value of helping men and women recover from alcoholism and substance abuse," Rice said.

Kosciusko Coalition On Drug Education, a Kosciusko County drug-free coalition, provided $5,000 in funding for scholarships for residents.
