Speaking to Inside Indiana Business Wednesday, Coats called the 79-20 vote for repeal of the 2.3 percent tax a “big step forward” in light of the more than 30 Democrats who joined Republicans in supporting the measure.
Coats described the vote as “the first real niche” in the Affordable Care Act and said it sets the stage for repeal.
The Senate measure was considered largely symbolic because budget votes don’t bind spending.
The medical device tax, which went into effect in January, applies to a range of medical products from bedpans and rubber gloves to artificial joints. If allowed to stand, it is projected to raise about $30 billion over a decade.[[In-content Ad]]
