BUNKER HILL -ÊThe Northfield Norsemen's basketball team was 6-14, the Manchester Squires 15-6.

But the Norsemen upset the Squires 42-41 in triple overtime in Thursday's second round of the Maconaquah 2A Sectional.

The Squires led 8-6 after the first quarter and held a 15-11 halftime lead after a low-scoring first half.

The Norsemen came out and had a scoring surge in the third frame, outscoring Manchester 16-5 to take 27-20 lead into the fourth.

Manchester came back in the fourth, holding Northfield to just two points in the quarter. At the end of regulation, the score was knotted at 29.

Just four total points were scored in the first overtime period, and the Squires and Norsemen went into a second overtime tied at 31.

Again, the teams remained equal in the second period of overtime, each scoring four points to send the game into yet another overtime.

Near the end of the third overtime, Northfield's Adam Lynn blocked Lee Shafer basket and got the ball to Kyle Merrick who was fouled. With 26 seconds left on the clock, Kyle Merrick hit two baskets from the charity stripe to give the Norsemen a four-point lead.

Shafer hit two free throws with 15 ticks left in the extra period to bring the Squires within two.

Nick Clifton hit a free throw at the other end of the floor to increase Northfield's lead to three, and Manchester regained control of the ball. Rex Reimer attemped a three-pointer, but it missed the mark and the Squires settled for a two-point rebound basket from Swan.

With no timeouts remaining, Squires watched helplessly as the final seconds and their hopes of a sectional title slipped away.

Shafer, the only Squire in double figures, led all scorers with 16 points. The next Manchester scorer was Rex Reimer with seven. An injured Eric Swan scored four points in limited playing time.

Manchester ended the season with a 15-7 record.

The Manchester loss was not the only upset of the evening. In the other sectional game, 10-11 Maconaquah knocked off 18-3 Southwood 66-58.

Northfield meets Maconaquah, which won the sectional title last season, at 7:30 this evening.
