Secrest Muscles Lady Vikings Over County Rival Warsaw

Valley junior tallies 23 points, 13 rebounds, 5 blocks in 45-42 win

AKRON – With a huge second-half performance Friday night, Tippecanoe Valley standout Anne Secrest helped her team improve to 3-0 this season, as well as 3-0 against county rival Warsaw in her prep career.
In a back-and-forth high school girls basketball game, the 6-foot-2 junior scored 17 points in the third and fourth quarters, leading the Class 3A No. 6 Lady Vikings to a 45-42 win over the visiting Lady Tigers.
Secrest, who made 9 of 12 shots from the floor and 5 of 9 attempts from the free throw line, finished the game with 23 points, 13 rebounds, five blocks and two steals.
“A big part of that was we allowed her to cut over the top of us, which we didn’t do in the first half, and we didn’t box out as well in the second half at key points in time,” Warsaw coach Michelle Harter said of Secrest’s performance. “We allowed her to get second and third opportunities, and when you do that, a good player like her, she’s going to score. She’s going to hit those shots. We just didn’t execute down the stretch tonight when we needed to.”
The Lady Tigers, looking for their first win of the season after losing at Huntington North and Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, had a chance to win Friday’s game but Secrest had other ideas.
Trailing Valley 43-42, Warsaw inbounded the ball with just under six seconds remaining in the game.
The Lady Vikings had just committed a turnover of their own while inbounding the ball, and Secrest made up for it by stealing Warsaw’s inbound pass.
Secrest was fouled with just under a second left in the game and calmly made both free throw attempts to seal the deal.
Warsaw boasts a commanding 45-6 lead in the overall series, but the Lady Vikings have won the last three meetings, and Secrest has been a big part that.
Two years ago as a freshman, she scored 23 points and pulled down 16 rebounds in a 57-50 win over the Lady Tigers.
Last year she only scored eight points, but helped her team edge Warsaw 38-36.
“We kind of expect that from her now,” Valley coach Chris Kindig said of his all-state center’s effort. “I think from her 8th grade year to her freshman year she improved, and every year she’s gotten a little bit better. I think this year she’s taken another step forward, and so you kind of have to expect this out of her, but I think you have to give our team credit. I thought we did a good job in the second half looking for her inside. We ran some plays for her down there, and we were able to get some three-point plays. But that’s just the way she is. She plays hard, and obviously she’s a really good basketball player for us.”
The teams were knotted at 9-9 after one quarter of play.
The Lady Tigers led 24-18 at halftime, and the game was again tied at the end of the third quarter, 31-31.
A three-pointer by junior Dayton Groninger gave Warsaw a 42-40 lead with 3:39 remaining, but Valley trimmed the deficit to one with a Secrest free throw, and then took the lead for good on a rebound and basket by the all-stater with 40 seconds left.
Valley’s three consecutive wins over the Lady Tigers have come by a combined 12 points.
“Hopefully those days (of being dominated by Warsaw) are over,” said Kindig. “This is a big game for our girls, and we really had a nice crowd tonight ... one of the best we’ve had in several years here. The girls were ready to play, and I think they were maybe a little too hyped about it, to be honest with you.
“For us, it’s a local rivalry, but they’re not in our class, and they’re not in our sectional anymore, so we’re just going to enjoy this one and get ready for Maconaquah on Tuesday night. We’re going to take one game at a time. We’re going to cherish this one for a night or two, and we’ll come back to practice on Monday and get ready for Maconaquah and for our tournament next weekend.”
The Lady Vikings, who had to overcome 19 turnovers and a 1-of-13 shooting performance from three-point range, got nine points and six boards from junior Hannah Dunn, and seven points from senior Brynda Krueger.
Groninger led Warsaw with 14 points, four boards and four steals, while junior Kenzie Welk chipped in with eight points, and classmates Mariah Rivera and Madi Graham scored six points each.
Though team ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard, Harter praised her players for how far they’ve come in just a week.
The Lady Tigers opened the season with a disappointing 28-point loss at Huntington North, then fell 55-50 at Luers on Tuesday.
“We’re going to continue to get better,” said Harter. “We’ve made tremendous strides here in this first week. This is a completely different team than the one that stepped on the court Saturday night at Huntington. That’s the nice thing with this team, they’re just going to continue to get better.”
Warsaw is in action again tonight when it hosts Class 4A No. 9 Noblesville, followed by a home game Tuesday against 4A No. 3 Penn.
“Our schedule is brutal, and when you’re talking about having a young team and playing as many road games as we have here to start, not having as many practices in between games to tweak some things ... I think the girls have done a great job of improving in this first week,” said Harter.
