NORTH MANCHESTER - Note to teams hosting the Manchester girls basketball team this year: stock up on folding chairs.

With 13 players and a handful of coaches and managers, the Class 2A No. 2 Squires' bench was a bit crowded Friday night.

And when Manchester played defense against Mississinewa, it seemed like they were all on the court.

The Squires forced seven first-quarter turnovers, jumped out to a 16-3 lead after the opening period and never looked back in a 52-17 win over the Indians.

All 13 girls played - though no coaches or managers saw any action - as Manchester used suffocating defense, sharp passing and supreme team speed to top Mississinewa.

The Squires saw 10 players score and saw its starters play limited minutes as Manchester's benevolent coach, Mark Underwood, began to sub players quite liberally in the second quarter.

"Obviously we never want to run the score up," said Underwood. "But we also never want to quit playing hard. We didn't use a full-court press or half-court trap, but our quarter court defense was really solid tonight."

Underwood pointed to Manchester's last game, one that saw the Squires struggle on the defensive end at times in a 66-35 win over Prairie Heights.

"In our last game we didn't come out mentally tough on defense. We had a good effort tonight. We stayed mentally tough and that's great because the kids noticed we struggled a bit last game," said Underwood.

The Squires used their quickness to jump into Mississinewa's passing lanes and wreak havoc on the Indians' half-court offense.

When Manchester had the ball on offense, it was senior point guard Audrey Siebrase running the show to near perfection.

"I think our kids are seeing the floor very well and working together as a unit," said Underwood.

Siebrase finished the game, in limited action, with five assists.

"Audrey Siebrase did a great job from the point guard spot," said Underwood. "She had five assists to lead us. She only had two points but was responsible for a lot more."

Sophomore Katie Bowers led Manchester in scoring with 13 points and also pulled down four rebounds.

Bowers sparked a 10-0 run to end the second quarter for Manchester.

Mississinewa failed to score in the second quarter, and had it not been for Indian forward Fallon Price, the Indians may have gone scoreless in the third quarter as well.

Price hit a layup and one of two free throws to account for all of Mississinewa's three third-quarter points.

Manchester showed its depth in the second half as Underwood rested most of his starters and put just one starter on the floor at points during the final 16 minutes.

The Squires were led off the bench by Bowers, Mercedes Lockhart and a handful of other players.

"Katie Bowers led us in scoring off the bench tonight and we're really pleased with her play," said Underwood. "Mercedes Lockhart is a player we have a lot of confidence in."

Despite resting most of his starters for the second half, Underwood's squad forced 21 Mississinewa turnovers and held the Indians to 7-of-34 shooting (21 percent) from the field.

Manchester's lone deficiency came from the free throw line.

The Squires shot just 6 of 11 from the charity stripe.

Manchester held a 32-16 rebounding edge over the Indians, with Christa Peden and Denae Pyle each pulling down five boards for the Squires.

Senior forward Libby Pattison had six points and four rebounds for Manchester despite picking up her fourth foul early in the second half.

In junior varsity action, Manchester won 36-27.

The Squires, 3-0 on the season, are in action tonight at Winamac. The JV contest tips off at 6:15 p.m.
