NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊAfter a close first quarter, the Manchester Squires held the Wawasee Warriors to just three second-quarter points to earn a 57-39 victory.

Rex Reimer began the first quarter of the Manchester-Wawasee basketball game with a three-pointer to give the Squires a quick 3-0 lead.

Manchester took an early 8-0 lead with 5:40 on the clock, but Wawasee went on a 10-2 run to tie the score at 10. Although Wawasee tied the score, the Squires never relinquished the lead and took a 12-10 lead at the end of the first frame.

"We dug ourselves into a hole early in the first quarter, but we came back and did some things that made them go to plan B and plan C," said Wawasee coach Jerry Davis. "They had many possessions where they had to throw the ball around several times before they got their shots off."

Eric Swan scored the first points of the second quarter, but Josh Zolman answered with a three-point goal of his own to put Wawasee within one, 14-13. Those would be the only Wawasee points of the second quarter as Manchester's defense squelched the Wawasee scoring drive.

"In the second quarter, we played good basketball at both ends of the floor," said Manchester coach Gary Goshert. "On the defensive end, we did a good job of pressuring them. When the defense goes well, it enhances the offense and makes every aspect of the game go more smoothly."

"I thought the Manchester players got the defensive boards well and they didn't miss a lot of shots, especially in the second quarter, " said Davis.

At the half, Manchester had pulled ahead 30-13 and took a comfortable lead into the locker room.

The Squires continued their scoring attack in the third as they outscored the Warriors, 18-9, as Swan and Reimer combined for 16 Manchester points.

"We had good second and third quarters," said Goshert. "We made some nice transitions, and then we made some good decisions in the transitions."

Wawasee made a run in the final quarter of play as they outscored the Squires 17-9, but the Warriors were unable to dig themselves out of the hole created in the second and third quarters. In the end, Wawasee lost its 16th game of the season to the Manchester Squires, 57-39.

Manchester's Swan led all scorers with 26 points, and Andrew Warner added 13 points for the Wawasee squad.

"Eric (Swan) had a hot hand all night," said Goshert. "He capitalized on the opportunities that were created for him, and he created some opportunities for himself. The other guys also did a good job of recognizing that Eric was hot and got the basketball to him."

For the Squires, Reimer and Steve Fawcett added eight and six points respectively, as Zolman and R.J. Nethaway chipped in nine and eight points respectively for the Warriors.

"Our guys were all over Manchester, but they rose above us literally," said Davis. "We couldn't get a hand on the ball.

"I am pleased with the way our guys came out focused and played good basketball after last night's embarrassment at Concord," said Davis. "The kids came out and played defense well, but Manchester just shot the ball well."

"I have a lot of respect for the players and coaching staff of this Wawasee team," said Goshert. "They play an extremely difficult schedule week in and week out, and it's tough to play hard when you are in the situation they are in.

"It's easy to play when you have a nice record and are winning games. People don't realize how tough it is on a team to come out and work hard when you don't have those things."

Manchester, now 13-3, hosts Fort Wayne Harding Saturday while Wawasee hosts NLC rival NorthWood Friday night.
