Second Good As First For Valley

ROCHESTER - Second place was good enough for first place for Tippecanoe Valley's girls golf team in Saturday's match at Mill Creek Golf Course.
The Three Rivers Conference Invitational was held at the Rochester course. Nine teams competed, not all of them TRC schools. Eastern took first with 407, while Valley placed second with 420.
Eastern won the overall invitational, but Valley finished first among the TRC schools to win the TRC Tournament portion of the invitational.
This is only the second TRC Tournament for girls golf teams. Rochester won last year.
Valley led the invitational after the first nine holes with 199, but the Vikings shot 22 strokes worse on the back nine for 221.
Eastern was consistent, turning in 203 on the front nine and 204 on the back nine.
Mary Gast, who Valley coach Roger Moriarty says has been his most consistent golfer the last five matches, led Valley with 103. She shot 47 on the front nine, but thanks to five penalty strokes, shot 56 on the back nine. Brenda Rose shot 104 for Valley, as did freshman Kendra Koser in her first varsity start. Erica Pontious shot 109, and Ginger Ervin shot 112.
All five Vikings shot worse on the back nine than on the front nine.
"I don't want to say we lost our train of thought," Moriarty said, "but we kind of dumped some balls in the water on the back nine more than we needed to.
"Whether we weren't ready to go the full 18 or whatever, I don't know. We didn't finish strong for some reason."
Manchester placed third with 429. The Squires' Dorey Bungitak fired 83 to win medalist honors. She shot 38 on the front nine and 45 on the back nine. Her 83 was 24 strokes better than the second-best score turned in by a Squire, Christina Evans' 107.
Bungitak's 83 was a Manchester school record for 18 holes.
After Manchester, Maconaquah shot 464, Western 465, Peru 471, Rochester 483, Caston 507 and Whitko 532. DeAnna Metler's 105 led Whitko.
Valley, 8-4, meets Whitko at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sycamore Golf Club in North Manchester.
Manchester, 2-1, hosts Rochester at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Sycamore Golf Club.
