The following is my conclusion to the background information on secession. Previous letters included a book list for those wanting to study further on this subject, a basic definition and brief historical examples of secession.
Five positions on secession
1. Unionist Position – The union is indivisible now and forever, any and all necessary means including waging all-out war should be used to preserve the integrity of the union against any peaceful or violent secessionist movements that threaten to divide it, no matter what legitimate grievances that they may have for separating from that union.
2. Centrist Position – Secession should be permissible for any territory within a union with residents capable of forming at the very least a functioning city-state or a larger political entity, but only under certain lawfully defined circumstances and procedures done in a peaceful and orderly fashion with both parties accepting the results of that process and refraining from violence. It is something that should not be used for trivial or nefarious reasons and usually as a last resort in preserving liberty from an oppressive and corrupt government that cannot be altered by peaceful means. Which makes secession a far preferable option than having to resort to revolution, civil war, or guerrilla warfare to alter or remove an oppressive and corrupt government or submitting to the tyranny of such a government.
3. Separatist Position – An independent homeland should be established for one’s particular region, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, language, political affiliation, social-economic status etc. by all necessary means including waging war or acts of violence against the rest of the union if it refuses to grant independence to one’s future homeland, even if there are no series of abuses that would even justify such a separation or remaining as a part of that union would be more beneficial to all involved.
4. Anarchist Position – Individuals or groups of individuals have the right to absolve themselves of any allegiance to the authority (i.e. the laws, taxes, courts, police, etc.) of the central government of their country and become their own independent micro republics by any and all necessary means including waging violence against the rest of the union.
5. Undecided/No Opinion Position – One either does not know what position to take or has no opinion on this issue. The centrist position can be a viable solution to long-standing conflicts within countries around the world where a state of peaceful coexistence cannot be reached between the conflicting parties involved if they were to remain as part of one nation. However in a certain amount of cases due to the decades or centuries of accumulated animosity between proponents of the Unionist and Separatist positions. The implementation of the centrist position can be next to impossible.
Further letters on this subject will follow with a list of secessionist organizations, a model declaration of independence and a model constitutional amendment.
