Seat Belts

Tuesday night Feb. 5 I was involved in a two-vehicle accident in which I was side swiped from the driver door to the back bumper. It did a lot of damage to my truck and the other fellow's vehicle.

This accident was started from water crossing Ind. 15 at the Army Satellite business. I had encountered a lot of water by the Verizon Wireless building at Ind. 15 N. So I slowed down even more, thank God for that and also that we both were wearing our seat belts. I wonder if we hadn't been in our seat belts how serious that injuries would have been or possibly the fatalities that could have been involved from the impact. I knew for a split second I was in deep trouble. When I saw his car skid out of control down on me. The injury I received was a blow to the head from the driver door or beam behind it. The seat belts kept me in place.

I have always felt as many do that seat belts are uncomfortable and cumbersome. Maybe they are to a point, but before you get thrown around your vehicle or ejected, uncomfortable seems like a minor technicality. Don't think it can't happen to you, because it can and odds are it will.

So my message to you people who don't wear your belts, accidents can happen in a blink of an eye. Be prepared by being buckled in.

To the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Dept., thank you for your prompt response. Also thank you to the 911 dispatch that night and the EMS personnel I believe from Leesburg.

I have a message I would like in this letter to the other driver. I'm sick about all the damage and inconvenience this is causing on both of us, but if hitting me saved your life, or serious injury, I'm glad I was there. Vehicles can be replaced. Lives are so much more valuable and I was so happy to hear you were OK and I thank God for that.

Remember folks with all this water washing across the road it's a real hazard. Stay out of it even if you have to go out of your way. We've had one tragedy with two children and that is two too many. Please put safety first.
