SYRACUSE - In a battle of scrappy vs. intense, scrappy won out.

The Warsaw Tigers, described by Wawasee coach Amy Miller as "scrappy," topped the Warriors in three games 25-13, 25-23, 25-16 in Northern Lakes Conference action.

Wawasee came out as the more intense of the two teams and it worked to the Warriors' advantage as they hung with Warsaw early.

Warsaw senior Kate Miller served two aces and before long the Tigers built a 12-6 lead that forced Miller to take a timeout.

The Tigers then outscored Wawasee 7-3 out of the timeout to push their lead to 19-9.

Tiger junior Alexis Albertson then closed out the first game with two straight aces to give Warsaw the win at 25-13.

"We had good body line on our serves tonight," said Warsaw coach Doug West. "Which means we had a good angle on our serves which allowed us to serve line drives."

Warsaw's Danielle DeGeeter and Shelby Runnells each racked up 11 points for the evening.

The second game saw both teams battle back and forth early with Wawasee's intensity and attacking keeping the Warriors in the match.

Wawasee built a 13-10 lead but a DeGeeter spike that gave Warsaw the serve back and seemed to settle the Tigers down. Another DeGeeter spike tied the second game up at 13-13. Warsaw then began to pull away and despite two timeouts to build up her team's confidence, Miller couldn't get her kids' confidence back up.

"We've had trouble with that all year," said Miller of her team. "We've had trouble keeping our confidence high and intensity high. We are improving though, and I thought we did a better job of that tonight."

Warsaw senior Jill Kreinbrink put the second game away with a spike as the Tigers pulled out a hard-fought 25-23 win.

In the third game, Warsaw showed why it's 15-5 on the season as the Tigers took control of the game early and never looked back.

The Tigers quickly pushed their lead to 10-4.

With Kreinbrink serving, the Tigers pushed their lead to 17-9.

After Wawasee took a timeout down 23-14, Warsaw gave up a couple of points.

The Tigers' match point came when DeGeeter, after a long point, found a seam in the Warriors defense to seal the win for the Tigers.

While the Tigers won in three games, West gave Wawasee credit for giving his team all they could handle.

"Wawasee has a really good blocking scheme that gave us a lot of trouble early on," said West.

Janae Stewart and Krista Spearman finished with five and four points respectively.

Kate Denlinger and DeGeeter led Warsaw with eight kills apiece.

DeGeeter also led the Tigers with 15 assists.

Warsaw libero Selina Long had 25 digs for the Tigers.

Wawasee was led by Jess Signorelli's eight assists. Shawn Knafel had six kills and Amber Timmons finished with 16 digs for the Warriors.

Wawasee, 9-13 on the season and 0-4 in the NLC, compete in the Homestead Tournament Saturday at 9 a.m.

Warsaw, 15-5 overall and 4-1 in the NLC, host the Tiger Invitational Saturday with Bellmont, Fort Wayne North Side, Lafayette Jefferson, LaPorte, Muncie Burris, Prairie Heights and Southwood competing.
