Schutt Ave. Access To Be Improved
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
SILVER LAKE - Schutt Avenue in Silver Lake is one step closer to being a little bit longer and a lot more durable.
Thanks to a motion approved unanimously Tuesday night at the regular Silver Lake Town Council meeting, Schutt Avenue will be extended into the lake and covered in cement. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources Water Division also must approve the roadway extension before the work may begin.
The road currently measures 24 feet in length, turning to gravel at the lake. The new cement street will be 12 feet wide, 27 feet long and 8 inches deep, extending into Silver Lake.
Once approved by the DNR, Law and Sons Inc. will pave the road at a cost of $2,065.
The council also approved a motion to improve the exterior of the town's water plant.
"(The building) is in much need of outside repair in one way or another," said council president Stanley Williams.
A $6,850 quote from Carr Construction includes covering the outside of the building with plastic and insulation before siding is installed.
Currently, the building is covered with a brush-on sealer that is chipping and peeling. As it stands, the building must be repainted or resealed every two to three years.
In other business, the council:
• Approved a motion to buy a chainsaw from Hoffman's Simplicity for $200.
• Tabled a motion regarding air tanks for the fire department. Buying six to eight tanks would take a large percentage of the fire department's equipment budget for the rest of the year.
"I'm a little leery of spending it all here in March," said Fire Chief Rob Clark, who suggested the possibility of waiting until later in the year to buy the air tanks. The board will reconsider the motion at the April 11 meeting.
• Heard Clark is resigning the position of fire chief. He will remain on the fire department, but he does not want to be chief any longer for personal reasons.
• Adopted resolution 03-01-06. Ten percent of both the sewer and water operating funds currently are put into a depreciation fund to pay bonds. The balance in that fund now is sufficient to pay the last bonds. The new resolution allows the money taken from the funds to be put into water and sewer improvement funds. If another bond is needed, the money will go back to the depreciation funds.
• Approved a sewer adjustment for Doug Cox. Cox had a water leak.
• Heard an update on a grant application from Town Marshal Craig Hollopeter. Hollopeter applied for a grant from the K21 Foundation to buy weather radios for town residents. No decision on the grant will be made until March 24.
• Heard waterlines will be flushed the first two weeks in April. State highways also will be swept during those two weeks.
• Heard Town Manager Phil Shalley will replace the flag in the town hall meeting room.
• Heard Town Clerk Angie Glass will be on vacation March 31 through April 9 so office hours may vary during that week.
Silver Lake Town Council members are Stanley Williams, president; Ronald Jones and Tom Waite. [[In-content Ad]]
