School Project Completion Seen By End Of June

Work on the Warsaw Community High School improvement and expansion project still is slated to be completed by the end of June, according to Joe Hoffman, of Construction Control Inc., the construction management company.
Monday, the school board heard three different reports on the project, including a list of change orders totaling a little more than $10,000.
One change order was for the reduction of $14,962.55 for an acid tank not installed. A change order for an increase of $4,325.86 was for miscellaneous time and materials work such as adding switches in the kitchen and scoreboard parts. The third change order was a credit of $23,480 for substitution of ceiling tile in the music rooms. A change order of not-to-exceed $44,410 was approved for the alterations to the soccer fields. The architect will reimburse WCS for these costs as indicated by Schmidt Associates Inc.
Kyle E. Miller, of Schmidt Associates, and architect Mary Scearce-Rudisel, gave a report on some of the issues previously discussed at the Jan. 30 school board meeting.
The first problem listed was the soccer fields were smaller than requested. Schmidt Associates are reworking the fields and will offset the costs themselves.
The football field has problems with drainage, track issues, sod, track lighting, shot-put and discus pads. Work is still ongoing to resolve the issues at the field by June 2006.
Poles for softball field lighting and power to scoreboards were in the wrong location. That issue is resolved at no cost to WCS.
The performing arts center balcony and seating had to be redesigned for code compliance. Scearce-Rudisel said they are working with the seating supplier to bring the lost 18 seats back.
There were five unanticipated columns in the fitness center. To correct this, the structural system was reworked to reduce the number of columns to two.
The paint colors were not what the staff would have preferred. The colors were re-evaluated and changed. Some of the projection screens were not included in the base bid because they were in alternates not accepted. A projection screen will be provided in the football locker building at no cost.
The new HVAC system and controls were not functioning as anticipated. Miller said they have been working quite a bit on those issues to get them fixed.
A light post was in the wrong place near the loading dock. Miller said that was discussed and determined not to be an issue.
Also, the security fence around WCHS was higher than the school sign when approached from the south. Miller said that fence was lowered at no cost to WCS.
Wayne Schmidt, owner of Schmidt Associates, drove all the way from Indianapolis to apologize for any inconveniences the issues may have caused the school corporation.
"You have our continued commitment to perform and we stand by our work," he said.
When the project is wrapped up, he said the school board will be pleased.
The third presentation was the bi-monthly construction update, presented by Hoffman.
In brief, Hoffman said:
• Work has resumed on site pavements such as walks and concrete pads. The field event areas are complete.
• The work on the physical education building is complete with the exception of a few list items.
• On the new performing arts addition, the overhead electrical, mechanical and sheet metal work is essentially complete.
• The weight/wrestling rooms is complete with the exception of a few list items and the state inspection of the new elevator.
• The new reception area is close to completion.
• Testing and balance work has begun on the new mechanical equipment. [[In-content Ad]]
