To be on the receiving end of Ms. Torpy's wrath for two consecutive days does make one feel special.

Kosciusko County's own Constitutional scholar, Ms. Torpy, says health care legislation is unconstitutional. Would Ms. Torpy share the exact text where Social Security and Medicare are Constitutional? Once you have located that, you will have the justification for health care reform. (Incidentally, in your previous letter you asked for exact "verbiage" on a Constitutional point. My dictionary defines verbiage as "an excess of words; wordiness." Did you want me to add words or do you just not know the meaning of verbiage?)

The only justification for Social Security is Article 1, Section 8 under the general welfare clause. The Social Security Act was challenged in the Supreme Court in 1937. The Act was upheld only after FDR threatened to increase the number of justices from nine to 15. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say that once a person reaches the magical age of 65 that the government will take care of them for the rest of their lives.

The same can be said of Medicare. This was passed also under the general welfare clause. The same ideology should be used in the discussion of health care reform.

In your Dec. 1 letter, you mentioned you had voted for JFK. So you must be of Social Security and Medicare age. Congratulations on your longevity, but since there is no more constitutional authority for Social Security and Medicare than there is health care, you shouldn't expect the government to take care of you. So how about it, Linda? Pull yourself up by your bootstraps and step up to the plate. Get a job, pay for your own health care and stop expecting the government to gimme, gimme, gimme. If you're unable to do these things, that's too bad. You should have planned better, worked harder, saved more and taken necessary steps to provide for yourself.

Also, I find your thought process on opinion writing to be rather duplicitous. You accused Anthony of being "unstrung" and me of being full of "hate and loathing." To what high journalistic standard do you ascribe your own bile-laden ramblings?
