MENTONE - Playing at a field named "Death Valley" on Halloween night could be pretty scary for most teams. South Bend St. Joseph's, though, was not one of those scared teams.

Instead, the Indians left Tippecanoe Valley High School with quite a few treats in the second round of the high school football sectional. SBSJ used its team speed against the Vikings and ended Valley's season with a 35-12 win.

"Their team speed is something we haven't seen all year," said Vikings head coach Scott Bibler. "We gave up too many big plays to have a chance to win."

The Indians' team speed was evident from the opening drive of the game. After Tim Coleman ripped off a 31-yard run, quarterback Joe McDonnell found receiver Matt Weldy, who had gotten behind the Valley defense, for a 45-yard scoring strike.

Eight minutes later McDonnell had SBSJ in the endzone again with a 22-yard scoring pass.

Trailing 15-0, though, the Vikings did not abandon their game plan.

Following the Indians score Valley went to its strength, running the ball between the tackles. For 15-straight plays the Vikings ran the ball straight up the middle of the SBSJ defense. Bryan Wong had 12 of those carries and capped off the powerful drive with a two-yard touchdown dive to pull the team close at 15-6.

With time running out in the half McDonnell connected for his third scoring pass with 25 seconds left on the clock. That gave the Indians a 22-6 lead at the half.

Trailing by 16 points, Bibler took Wong out of the game. The junior had 71 yards in the first half, but needing points the team went to the air.

Vikings' quarterback David Beyers threw for 70 of his 94 yards in the second half. In the fourth quarter he connected with receiver Matt Eby on a 24-yard scoring pass.

But the Indians weren't done. Just two minutes after Eby crossed the goal line Coleman scored for SBSJ to secure the win.

Even against a team with such a speed advantage Bibler thought his team played tough until the final horn.

"Our kids played hard and I'm proud of them," said Bibler. "South Bend is an excellent ball club."

Wong ended up with a team-high 94 yards on the night and Eby had 60 yards receiving on four catches.

The loss ends Valley's season with a record of 8-3.
