Hosting South Central in a Class 1A Sectional 33 semifinal football game, the Triton Trojans saw their season come to a close with a 47-20 loss.[[In-content Ad]]With the win, South Central advanced to the sectional championship Friday at Culver Community High School.
In the loss, Triton (2-9) had just eight fewer total yards than South Central (9-2) at 353-345, but the home team did have five turnovers to the Satellites' two.
"It kind of sums our season," Triton coach Rodney Younis said. "We've had a lot of turnovers this season, and you can't win when you turn the ball over. South Central is a big, physical team and they did a good job. They earned this one."
South Central used that size to run for 262 yards, averaging 6.9 yards a rush.
"I won't say it was easy, but we were able to get four or five yards a carry, consistently," South Central coach Jeff Karras said. "If you can get that, you're going to hold the ball all night and you're going to score points."
The school's all-time leading rusher, junior Ethan Biggs, was the toughest Satellite to put on the ground, as he ran for 119 yards and a score on 18 carries.
"He's a very patient runner," Younis said. "He just hides behind the big boys and once he finds an opening, he takes it."
With the ground game working so well, South Central's punter was able to take the night off.
Even with the defense struggling to stop Biggs and the rest of the Satellites' offense, Triton still found itself down just 14-6 with six minutes remaining in first half and in possession of the ball at the South Central 36.
Instead of cutting into the lead, junior quarterback Zak Shively had a pass picked off by South Central senior Ricky Rigsby. Rigsby returned the interception 78 yards to the end zone, increasing the lead to 21-6 with 5:31 remaining.
South Central senior Bryant Hoover then picked off a Shively pass on Triton's next possession. Hoover, who also serves as the Satellites' quarterback, then drove his team 80 yards, hooking up with Rigsby for a 38-yard touchdown with under a minute remaining in the half.
Scoring 21 points in the second quarter, the Satellites built up a lead that Triton couldn't overcome.
Along with Biggs' production, Hoover completed 5 of 6 passes for 91 yards and two scores, both of which went to Rigsby.
For Triton, Zak Shively connected with senior Taran Kennedy for a pair of touchdowns, while freshman running back Cody Shively ran for 94 yards and a score on 14 carries.
"We had a number of kids who saw significant playing time, unfortunately due to injuries," Younis said. "We had a lot of injuries this year, but definitely had some guys step in and play. It will help for the future."
