Sands Sets School Rebound Record In Win

SOUTH WHITLEY - Whitko senior center Melissa Sands set a school single-game record with 24 rebounds as the Wildcats beat Northfield 46-41 on Tuesday.

Sands also hit 8 of 13 shots from the field and led the Wildcats with 19 points. She had as many rebounds as the Northfield team, who also had 24. Whitko owned a 44-24 overall advantage on the boards. Last year's center, Rachel Brown, held the previous record with 22 rebounds.

The Wildcats shot nearly 50 percent from the field, hitting 18 of 37 shots. Northfield hit just 14 of 56 shots, 35 percent.

Whitko head coach Ray Davis was glad to see his team bounce back after a poor showing in a 69-32 loss to Columbia City.

"Our girls came out aggressive," he said. "Columbia City did us some good. It helped our sophomores come along, and it helped Sands come along.

"She played well. Career-wise, it was her best game. She showed what she could do when she stays out of foul trouble. She had two fouls, and she didn't pick those up until the fourth quarter. If she stays out of foul trouble, she can be very productive."

Sophomore Stephanie Warner also turned in a solid game for the Wildcats, finishing with 10 ponts and eight rebounds. Staci White led Northfield with 17 points.

Northfield is 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Three Rivers Conference.

Whitko, 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the TRC, has a 6:30 p.m. Thursday game at Manchester.

At North Manchester, the Marion girls' basketball team ended the Squires four-game win streak on Tuesday.

Sophomore Megan Eckert tallied 27 points, eight rebounds and three steals for Manchester. Katie Parker had six points, three assists, three steals and four rebounds. Lindsay Seagert chipped in with seven rebounds and four blocks.

The Squires hit only 3 of 21 three-point shots.

Eckert who hit 15 of 16 free throws last game, hit 11 of 12 this game, making her 26 of 28 from the line.

Manchester lost the junior varsity game 38-28. Krista Michel had 13 points and four steals for the Squires. The junior varsity Squires are 1-5.

Manchester, 4-2, hosts a 6:30 p.m. Thursday game with Whitko.

At Syracuse, the Wawasee Warrior girls' basketball team won its fourth game in a row on Tuesday.

The Warriors, 4-0, were helped by a second quarter that saw them outscore West Noble 14-4 to take a 27-14 halftime lead.

Aubrey Coy led Wawasee with 15 points, and Carly Beer added 13. Lydia Carpenter scored nine.

Wawasee won the junior varsity game 44-20.

West Noble's varsity squad fell to 0-4.

Wawasee hosts a 7:30 p.m. Thursday game with Concord.

The Warsaw Tiger boys' freshman basketball team upped its record to 2-0 with a Tuesday win over Manchester.

Jason Henthorn scored 15 points to lead Warsaw, and Ross Kesler added six. Steve Siebenmorgen paced the Tigers with six rebounds, and Mike VanLaeken was top assists man with five.

Warsaw's freshman B-team won 42-31. Jon Walmer turned in a solid game for the Tigers, leading the team in four categories. He scored 12, and had six rebounds and four steals. Kevin Dennig added eight points, and Erich Burner added four rebounds. Walmer and Kurt Kammerer were the top assists men with two each.

Warsaw has a 6:30 p.m. game at Concord.

• Swimming

Valley Boys Go 2-0

At Nappanee, the Tippecanoe Valley boys' swim team went 2-0 in a Tuesday meet.

The Vikings beat NorthWood 61-39 and beat North Judson 77-12.

The Vikings had seven first places against NorthWood. Scott Whetstone finished first in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle. Jason Paris won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Matt Baker won the 100 freestyle. The Viking relay teams also finished first in the 200 and 400 freestyles.

The Vikings placed first in 11 of the 12 events against North Judson. Paris won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Whetstone won the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle. Charlie Wise won the 50 freestyle. Baker won the 100 freestyle. Josh Spangle won the 100 backstroke, and Andre Queiroz won the 100 breaststroke.

The Vkings also won the 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays.

NorthWood beat North Judson 81-13.

The Valley boys, 2-0, host a 5 p.m. Thursday meet with Manchester.

The Wawasee girls won 147-38, taking first in every event. The Wawasee boys won 122-61, taking first in every event except two.

At Huntington, the Manchester boys' swim team opened its season with a Tuesday loss to Huntington North.

The Squires took five first places, including Charlie Summerland (200 freestyle), Jeremy Stacy (100 freestyle) and Rod Smith. The Squire 200 and 400 freestyle relays also took first place.

The Squires, who had only 10 swimmers, still set 16 personal records.

Manchester, 0-1, has a 5 p.m. Thursday meet at Valley.

At Huntington, the Manchester boys' swim team opened its season with a Tuesday loss to Huntington North.

The Squires took five first places, including Charlie Summerland (200 freestyle), Jeremy Stacy (100 freestyle) and Rod Smith. The Squire 200 and 400 freestyle relays also took first place.

The Squires, who had only 10 swimmers, still set 16 personal records.

Manchester, 0-1, has a 5 p.m. Thursday meet at Valley.
