She was born Feb. 24, 1935, in Oswego, to Kenneth and Eva Gannom Hartman. On Nov. 7, 1953, she married Robert Allen, who survives.
She graduated from Leesburg High School and was a secretary at Warsaw High School before becoming a stay-at-home mom. When her youngest child entered school, she became the librarian at Leesburg Elementary School, retiring after 37 years. While there, her love of music and unyielding devotion to children lead her to found and direct the kid's choir for 30 years. She was a member of Leesburg United Methodist Church, where she participated in the adult choir while she created and served as director of the youth choir. She later belonged to the Warsaw First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the Chancel Choir. She was an accomplished soprano soloist and was engaged to sing at events all around Indiana and twice traveled to Europe with the Sounds of Hope Choir. Her civic involvement included the organization of both the Leesburg Candleria and Leesburg Memorial Days Parades.
Her life was marked by a remarkable love for her children and grandchildren. They were, and continued to be, the symphony and magnum opus of her life.
Also surviving are four children: Kay (and spouse Steve) Pylant, Olathe, Kan.; Kip Allen, Pierceton; and Ken (and spouse Gayle) Allen and Kraig Allen, all of Leesburg; eight grandchildren, Matt Pylant and Quinn, Jared, Brandon (and spouse Amelia), Breydon, Brandtt, Blaine and Kristin Allen; and a great-grandchild, Madison.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Warsaw First United Methodist Church with Pastor Toni Carmer officiating. Burial will be in Leesburg Cemetery.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
