GOSHEN - Samuel Joseph "Joe" or "S.J." Schrock, 72, of 402 E. Maple Grove, Syracuse, and Millersburg, died unexpectedly as the result of cardiovascular disease on Nov. 26, 2007, in his winter residence in Chandler, Ariz.

He was born Aug. 15, 1935, in rural Benton Township southeast of Goshen, to George D. and Pearl E. Hartsough Schrock. On Aug. 26, 1956, in Goshen, he married Lauretta Wilson. They divorced in 1985, but remained close life-long friends.

He worked for his grandfather and father at Schrock Paster Co. He started D-J Construction Co. with his brother, Don, in 1954, and sold his half in 1966. He also owned several construction companies, including Tri-Jo-Co. and S.J.&Co.

He was a 1954 Millersburg High School graduate, where he lettered in three sports. He was the second all-time career scorer in Millersburg basketball with 784 points. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1957-60. He was a member of American Legion Post 484 and St. Peter's Lutheran Church, both in Millersburg. He worked into his late 60s as a self-employed carpenter, concrete finisher, mason and handy man. He enjoyed working in the yard and flower beds. He was an avid NASCAR fan and loved all of his family's pets.

Also surviving are two sons, J.C. (and spouse Katharine) Schrock, Goshen, and Kevin (and spouse Tonya) Schrock, Syracuse; a longtime friend, Susan Street, Chandler; four granddaughters: Candice (and spouse Travis) Targgart, Courtney (and spouse Malachi) Lindsey; and Caitlin and Kayla Schrock; two grandsons, Carter and Chad Schrock; a great-granddaughter, Malkia Lindsey; a great-grandson, Malik Lindsey; two step-granddaughters, Jackie and Jessie Todd; a step-grandson, Chris (and spouse Stacie) Todd; two step-great-granddaughters, Rylie Todd and Alexis Gooden; two step-great-grandsons, Dylan and Jackson Todd; a sister, Peg (and spouse John) Lantzer, Goshen; and two brothers, Don (and spouse Sherry) Schrock, Goshen, and Jerry (and spouse Susan) Schrock, Syracuse. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, George Calvin Schrock, who died June 16, 1939, and Harold A. Schrock, who died April 16, 1992.

There will be at private memorial service for family and close friends later in December. Burial will be in Brown Cemetery, Millersburg.
