BOURBON - If the late Chicago Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray had been at Triton's girls basketball game Saturday against Clinton Prairie in the semifinal round of the semistate, he would have approved of Betsy Salyer's performance.

Caray was the guy that when the count was two and two with two outs, he had to have a camera on the scoreboard. "The deuces are wild" he would have said.

Saturday, in a 75-60 win over Clinton Prairie, the dueces were wild for Triton 5-foot-10 senior center Salyer, who scored 22 points and pulled down 22 rebounds.

"We had to have it," Triton coach Mark Heeter said of Salyer's double-double. "If we didn't get some of those offensive putbacks, we could have been in trouble. We needed one like that from her."

The top-ranked Trojans improved to 21-3 with the win, while the unranked Gophers fell to 16-9.

Triton advanced to Saturday night's championship game to play Adams Central, who bested Union City 57-40 in the other semifinal game.

The Gophers led 20-15 after one quarter of play, but the Trojans came back to lead 36-30 at halftime.

In its previous state tournament games this year, Triton has put the opposition away in the first half using key runs at the start of the game. Against Clinton Prairie that didn't happen.

"We've been able to jump out early on teams," Heeter said. "Hey, Clinton Prairie was ready to play."

After a three by Morgan Lahrman cut Triton's lead to three, 38-35, the Trojans rattled off a 7-1 run, taking a 45-36 lead with 5:13 remaining in the third.

The Gophers came back and made it 50-46 when Rachel Alexander rebounded a shot with 1:15 remaining in the third, but Triton senior Brandie Ganshorn ended the quarter with a three, giving the Trojans a 53-46 lead.

The Gophers were as close as six, 59-53, in the fourth before the Trojans put the game away.

Triton sophomore Ashli Senff led all scorers with 28 points, while Amber Feldman scored nine, Ganshorn eight and Tracey Bell seven to complement Salyer's 22.

Sophomore Melissa Nance led the Gophers, who were outrebounded by Triton 40-25, with 16 points. Melissa Devore added 11 and Katie Siegfried seven.
