Salyer, who until this month was vice president of member relations for the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce, is taking over directorship of programs in Syracuse- and Warsaw-area schools from Vicky Decker starting this week.
“I loved working for the chamber, I loved my job there, but I thought it was time to move on to a new goal,” remarked Salyer, who said she hadn’t been looking for something new but had decided to give it a shot when she saw the JA directorship was open.
“For a long time I’ve felt that I was geared toward doing something like an executive director position,” she said. “I love working with volunteers, to build programs and fundraise – a lot of things I did with the chamber, but now it’s all toward one specific goal: teaching kids about entrepreneurship, economics and financial responsibility.”
JA offers economics programs such as BizTown and Finance Park for more than 6,000 students in Wawasee, Warsaw and Tippecanoe Valley schools. The group holds fundraisers every year to keep its programs going, such as 5K run-walks in summer and Bowl-A-Thon in fall.
Salyer, who has volunteered with JA programs in the past, said she looks forward to helping find new funding and grant opportunities for JA. She also noted the group has programs “in all the schools but not in every grade. That’s part of the challenge for me. It’s exciting, I love to create and be proactive in a growing program.”[[In-content Ad]]
