Salvation Army Starts Angel Tree

Last week was the first week for sign-up for the program and applications will be accepted through Nov. 20.
Sign up times are Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. at the Salvation Army, 501 Arthur St., Warsaw.[[In-content Ad]]To qualify for children to receive Christmas items from the program, a guardian must present photo identification, verify residency and income and provide the child's social security card and birth certificate.
As of closing Friday, there were 550 children signed up for the Angel Tree Program, according to Salvation Army Capt. Dale Brandenburg.
Last year, 500 children were served by the program.
"There are people who are on their third round of unemployment and want to make sure their children receive Christmas gifts," Brandenburg said.
The Salvation Army is also seeking people to adopt the children for the program and purchase Christmas items for the children.
Applications for people interested in adopting the children through the program are available at Salvation Army.
A Christmas tree will be displayed outside the entrance of Kmart, Warsaw, the week before Thanksgiving.
The tree will have tags hanging from it with the names, ages and suggested items to purchase for children enrolled in the program.
Those who want to purchase items for a child can purchase toys, a shirt, hats and mittens.
To register a child for the program or adopt a child for the program call the Salvation Army at 574-267-5361.
